Introduction
When students enter McNulty Hall — home of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry — the message is clear: Seton Hall is a state-of-the-art research and teaching center, strongly committed to scientific discovery. Students appreciate our innovative facilities — including flexible labs — while learning from some of chemistry's brightest minds. We offer four options for this STEM-designated degree, each tailored to different career or research goals. Whether you’re planning to pursue a life in the research, teaching, or the business side of chemistry, we can help you get there.
What Can I Do with a Master's in Chemistry?
With a Master's in Chemistry, when paired with concentrations in research and business, graduates are primed for advanced research roles in sectors like pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and materials science. This rigorous academic foundation not only facilitates breakthroughs in the lab but also positions individuals to adeptly handle the business aspects of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Furthermore, the advanced coursework and research experience can serve as a strong foundation for those considering Ph.D. candidacy, allowing a smoother transition into doctoral programs and positioning them for leadership roles in academia or industry. Seton Hall, with its emphasis on both research and business, ensures its graduates are well-rounded and ready for multifaceted careers in chemistry and beyond.
Curriculum
Students choose from four options with this degree: a research-based M.S. with a thesis (30 credits); a coursework-based M.S. without a thesis; an M.S. with a minor in business administration (34 credits); and a research-based M.S. leading to Ph.D. candidacy (30 credits). All master’s students take courses in each of the five branches of chemistry. Research opportunities are available in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and computational chemistry, as well as in biochemistry. Our department is committed to collaborative research with other institutions, particularly the local chemical industry in northern New Jersey.
