Introduction

The Master of Science in Synthetic Landscapes is a one-year, three-semester program focused on advancing knowledge and developing expertise in the design of complex landscapes for the twenty-first century.

With an emphasis on emerging problems in sustainable practice, mitigation strategies relative to climate change scenarios, and cultural values motivating experience within contemporary built environments, Synthetic Landscapes pursues new forms of engagement and innovative models of practice. In contrast to traditional landscape design programs that emphasize the stewardship of natural systems and traditional western cultural values associated with picturesque or sublime images of nature, this program emphasizes a global perspective where the coevolution of natural and artificial systems are shaping an ever more synthetic world.

The program requires attendance in the fall, spring, and summer terms
