Introduction
The Master’s Degree in Energy Engineering aims at providing a specific education on techniques and systems involved in energy generation and conversion. Specifically, arguments related to technological solutions, conversion, safety, management, and control of plants powered by fossil fuel, renewable energy sources, and nuclear sources.
Admissions
Curriculum
The Master of Science in Energy Engineering provides an in-depth study of the various specific disciplines that deal in detail with the system engineering, control, and management aspects of plant technologies aimed at energy production.
To leave room for the different technologies, four different paths are planned, aimed at deepening three technological chains and a generalist curriculum taught in English:
- Industrial applications of energy (in Italian)
- Industrial applications of energy (in Italian)
- Science and technologies of nuclear energy (in Italian)
- Energy Engineering (in English)
The 120 credits (ECTS) in which the degree course curriculum is organized to achieve the qualification are divided as follows:
- 81 CFUs acquired through characterizing and related training activities and courses;
- 12 ECTS credits acquired through educational activities chosen independently by the student;
- 6 ECTS credits acquired through various training activities, in particular workshops, traineeships, and stages;
- 21 CFUs acquired through training activities related to the preparation and discussion of the final test for the achievement of the qualification.
For the choice of optional exams (12 ECTS), and in any case, to prepare an individual study plan, students must fill in their choices on INFOSTUD within the time provided by the Faculty Regulations.
For the internship and final test, existing agreements between "Sapienza" University of Rome and other bodies, including ENEA (in the research centers of Casaccia and Frascati), ENEL, ACEA, TERNA, Energy Authority, SOGIN, IRSN (France), CEA (France), etc, can be used.
Internships and degree theses are also possible to be developed in companies such as electricity, gas, and oil companies, as well as primary engineering companies, both in Italy and abroad, also in the context of international mobility programs such as Erasmus, Erasmus Placements, and others.
The student who does not carry out the internship at institutional entities/companies outside the University must carry out, alternatively, AAF activities (one or two courses of 3 credits each) or a research and/or project activity in the context of topics related to the courses Degree; this will be considered as an equivalent activity - in terms of CFU - if certified by the course teacher and declared in advance of the beginning of the activities on a form countersigned by the chairman of the Board. The internship must be recorded on the Infostud platform. More details are reported on the Thesis page.
Credits will be assigned following the recognition of knowledge and professional skills certified individually by current legislation, if these skills have not been considered for the acquisition of credits used for the achievement of the Degree; the maximum number of recognizable credits is set at 18 ECTS.

Program Outcome
Learning outcomes
The two-year Masters Degree aims to provide a specialized education through in-depth study of the various disciplines that deal with power plant questions, such as control and management of the different technologies and energy generation control systems (mechanical, electric, thermal) of plants powered by fossil fuel (technologies, plants and energy management), renewable energy sources (technologies and plants using renewable sources) and nuclear (technologies and nuclear plants). To further study and explore each of these topics, the master's Degree provides specific differentiated programmes.
In addition to these specific programmes, a general curriculum in English is also available. Through this programme, it is possible to focus on energy technologies from renewable and nuclear sources.
The specific educational objectives are:
- An in-depth study of the theoretical, scientific and practical aspects of engineering, in particular, those of the energy engineering field; the capacity to identify, formulate and solve, also in innovative ways, complex problems or issues that require an interdisciplinary approach
- Development of the skills needed to devise, plan, design and manage energy systems and their processes and complex and/or innovative services
- The ability to plan and manage very complex experiments
The educational objectives are achieved through:
- (In-depth) theoretical and scientific studies: 1) of mathematics and other basic sciences and their specific applications and 2) of energy engineering to identify, formulate and solve, also in innovative ways, issues that require an interdisciplinary approach
- Development of the skills necessary to devise, plan, design and manage energy systems and their processes and complex and/or innovative services
- Acquisition of knowledge in the field of business organization and professional ethics
- Knowledge of scientific and technical terminology in English, for employment in the global job market
Scholarships and Funding
We can offer such convenient rates thanks to public funding from the Italian Ministry of Higher Education. Additionally, students can apply for various scholarships available at different levels, awarded based on academic merit and/or family income.

Career Opportunities
The professional outcomes opportunities foreseen are in the energy supply sector and production of mechanical, thermal, and electric energy, both from conventional energy sources and from renewable and nuclear sources; in the analysis of safety and environmental impact; in the dismantling of nuclear installations and the disposing of radioactive waste, in the creation of mechanical energy production systems, thermal and electric, for industrial and civil use, wherever a professional is required to take charge of energy and environmental planning (energy manager), and in the research centers in the energy sector.
The graduate with a master's Degree in Energy Engineering will be capable of working both in Italy and abroad as a freelance professional, in manufacturing or services companies, in public administrations, and in big companies, along the lines of the professions described previously. Students will also be able to continue their studies through 2nd level Professional Masters and research PhDs in the energy sector. Students who have obtained a sufficient number of credits in the scientific disciplinary sectors required by law will be able to teach in secondary schools.
