Introduction
The Master’s program in Mediterranean Archaeology offers a diachronic, comprehensive overview of the deep history of the Mediterranean through a thematic approach. Historic trajectories from Prehistory and Protohistory to Classical and Medieval worlds will be analyzed embracing a perspective that opens up towards Contemporaneity. The course highly benefits from the location in the city of Rome, at the core of the Mediterranean area.
The wide range of archaeological research in Italy and abroad led by Sapienza provides students with unique opportunities for fieldwork, lab activities, and stages on a Mediterranean scale. Agreements with the main national and international bodies of research, valorization, and cultural heritage protection expand the spectrum of training.
The Master’s course in Mediterranean Archaeology offers an innovative approach to archaeological studies that goes beyond the traditional separation of courses and curricula by period. The focus will be the processes, and cross-disciplinary themes, such as social and economic developments, cultural transformations, mobility and migrations, trade exchanges, and networks, on a diachronic perspective.
The Master provides students with advanced knowledge of state-of-the-art, theoretical backgrounds, methodologies, and techniques of archaeological studies and archaeological sciences. Students will also develop skills in the protection and communication of cultural heritage on a cross-Mediterranean dimension.

Curriculum
The course in Mediterranean Archaeology aims to extend the learning program in Archeology of the Department of Classics to an international audience.
Our teaching project is founded on a long experience of international master programs solicited and supported by the Sapienza Governance from 2010 through the agreement with other Institutions, various Summer Schools, and the participation of a CIVIS program including seven top European universities.
The top international ranking of the Archaeological studies in Sapienza enhanced the appeal of the teaching programs proposed by Sapienza for students all over the world.
The Mediterranean Archaeology master program proposes two curricula. The Curriculum in Mediterranean Archaeology offers a wide perspective on Archaeology from the Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The Curriculum in Paleolithic Archaeology offers to students interested in this ancient and fascinating period of Prehistory a dedicated program combining archaeology, archaeometry, and paleoanthropology. Moreover, the curriculum in Paleolithic Archaeology is articulated in a program entirely organized in Sapienza or organized as a CIVIS program joint title in the three universities of Tubingen, Sapienza, and Aix en Provence.
The curricula proposed by the Mediterranean Archaeology Master have a duration of two years. They are not conceived as just a copy of the master's in Archaeology offered in the Italian language. The curricula have a diachronic perspective, in the case of the Paleolithic curriculum, the students will survey a range of time of million years from the Lower Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic. The complex processes of evolution and change in the material culture and the landscape will be discussed in light of the most innovative methodology applied in archaeology.
