Introduction
MA in Filmmaking at Raindance Film School (accredited by De Montfort University) is a 21st-century degree for filmmakers, entrepreneurs, creatives and future academics wishing to upskill or transition into the film and digital media industry. This programme provides a unique opportunity for you to benefit from the experience of Industry Experts across the world, whilst developing your professional practice, as well as your research and independent study skills.
A truly international programme, MA in Filmmaking students have joined us from over 30 countries and counting! The course is not a traditional ‘taught’ course, rather, it takes ‘Practice as Research’ as its model and puts the acquisition of creative skills and knowledge at its heart, with four modules assessed via self-designed film projects (scripts, short films, pitch packages etc.).
Our flexible learning approach enables you to negotiate your curriculum (following our modular framework), set your own goals, define what skills and knowledge you need to acquire and then build your learning pathway to get there, whilst at the same time producing a portfolio of creative work.
On the MA in Filmmaking course, you will benefit from the allocation of a personal Industry Mentor, with whom you can meet once a month to discuss your creative work and who can help guide your choices, based on current practice. You are also supported by Module Leaders who will guide and support you in your academic research and reflective writing.
MA in Filmmaking at Raindance is part-time, usually completed over two years, allowing students to combine their studies with career and family commitments. Modules and Tutorials are completed via distance/ online, meaning students can complete their studies in their own countries/ homes, but for UK and London-based students, there is the possibility of attending the first two modules in person at Raindance HQ. There is also free, in-person, access to all Raindance open courses worldwide for ALL enrolled students.
You will have access to advanced MA screenwriting, directing, producing and documentary online workshops, and craft skills labs, that are run throughout the year. There are also numerous opportunities to collaborate with students from other courses at the film school on projects.
You will benefit from access to the Raindance Film Festival and Raindance industry events, as well as the opportunity to attend external festivals such as Cannes and Berlinale, helping you to begin to navigate your first steps into the international film and television industry.
For those seeking to pursue careers in Academia, or further postgraduate study (PhD), the ‘Practice as Research’ model of the course also enables you to acquire the fundamental academic skills, and qualifications, required to pursue these goals.
For UK-based students, this course is eligible for Student Finance.

Admissions
Curriculum
The Programme provides a structure for your learning. You will be able to negotiate the content of your modules.
- Learning Plan -15 credits, 150 hrs.
In this first module, the student is expected to develop and pitch to the university a Learning Plan that will act as a roadmap for individual study over two years part-time. The Learning Plan will form the link between the individual’s project & career goals and the Programme’s academic and modular frameworks.
- Research Paper -15 credits, 150 hrs.
This second module focuses on understanding proper research techniques, a lifelong skill to support a filmmaking, media and storytelling career. Students investigate a topic that is foundational to their chosen area of study.
- Negotiated Modules (x 3) -30 credits each, 300 hrs each.
Students design 3 separate modules negotiated with their mentors and advisors. Together these modules lead developmentally toward the student’s final masters project. The negotiated modules typically combine research and applied practice, testing or executing some aspect of writing, directing or producing.
- 4 Negotiated Masters Module -60 credits, 600 hrs.
The final Master's is the culmination of the student’s work in the Programme and brings together the learning done in the previous modules.
