Introduction

The specialization in Science and Geographic Information Systems aims to provide the technical and scientific framework related to geographic information analysis and technology, with particular emphasis on skills linked to modeling and analysis of spatial data, and design and planning of Geographic Information Systems in organizations.

This Master's degree is developed in collaboration with UNIGIS, an international network that brings together the best schools in the area of Geographic Information Systems, and obtained GEOINT (Geospatial Intelligence) accreditation from the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), having been the 1 1st course outside the USA to be accredited by this organization.

This Master's degree is taught via e-learning or blended. It lasts 4 academic semesters: 2 semesters of curricular component and 2 semesters for the development of a dissertation of a scientific nature, a project work or an internship report of a professional nature, for a total of 120 ECTS. Classes (1st and 2nd semesters of the course) will start in September 2024 and end in June 2025.

Horário

The Curricular Units (CU) that operate in person take place from 4:30 pm and the UCs in e-Learning have synchronous sessions (virtual classes in real time on the Internet), which always take place after work hours (from 8 pm to 10pm GMT), except GI Standards which will be from 6pm to 7pm.

The schedule of synchronous sessions, exams and deadlines for delivery and presentation of work for Curricular Units under an e-Learning regime, referring to the 2023-2024 academic year, are available here , and the timetable for the blended regime, will be available soon.

The e-Learning course is implemented in such a way that all subjects are taught through synchronous and asynchronous sessions, with students being monitored via email, chats and discussion forums that enable quick interaction between students and the teacher . In each edition of the course, classes are created in a virtual environment, providing students with all necessary study material, whether printed or digital, including notes, study guides, practical exercises and software licenses.

Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Certificate

The Geospatial Intelligence Graduate Certificate Program (GEOINT Certificate), accredited by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF), provides education and training in key geospatial scientific concepts, methods, and technologies used in solving global human security problems, including disasters. natural resources, humanitarian crises, environmental risks, military operations, political violence, public health and challenges in accessing food sources.

USGIF is the only organization dedicated to promoting the professional practice of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) and building a community of interest across Industry, Academia, Public Administration and professional organizations. USGIF is the only organization that provides university accreditation in the area of GEOINT, being the world leader in this area.

The program is developed over a set of 4 mandatory curricular units of the Master's Degree in Science and Geographic Information Systems, totaling 30 ECTS:

  • Science and Geographic Information Systems;
  • Modeling in Geographic Information Systems;
  • Remote Sensing;
  • Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT).

The set described above is complemented by a set of optional curricular units totaling 30 ECTS.

The certificate will only be awarded by USGIF to students with an average classification equal to or greater than 14 points (out of 20) in the total of the 60 ECTS required.

UNIGIS Certification

Within the scope of the UNIGIS International network, students who complete a distance master's degree in Science and Geographic Information Systems (95 ECTS) can obtain the European Master's in GI Science, Project 29320-IC-3-98-1-AT-ERASMUS- CDA-1 (EuroMasterGI Certificate) complementary to your course diploma, by completing:

  • A minimum of 12 ECTS obtained in a foreign language (other than the course language or the national language);
  • Course Unit "EuroGIS" module 6 ECTS - Universität Salzburg;
  • Dissertation, Project Work or Internship of a Professional Nature written in English;
  • An international learning experience (eg UNIGIS International Summer School) with a minimum of 2 ECTS.

UNIGIS is an international network of Universities that, through distance learning, offers specialization and master's degrees in Science and Geographic Information Systems. This international consortium was founded in 1990 and is currently made up of a network of several universities.

The planning and structure of the courses offered result from close collaboration between UNIGIS members, who cooperate with each other in developing course curricula and adapting them to different national realities.
