Introduction
North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) is a state key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. It has been officially listed in the national “211 Project”. As a major public university, NCEPU is characterized for its predominant disciplines of “Energy Resources & Electric power”, and committed to providing talents and technologies for the development of the Chinese electric power industry. To meet the nation’s needs for sustainable energy, NCEPU established the first Renewable Energy School (RES) under the supports of the National Energy Administration of China, Ministry of Education of China, and the renewable power industry in China in 2007. It offers an interdisciplinary degree program that is structured from an integration of various subjects, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, the hydroelectric, wind, and solar energy.
RES endeavors to be a world-class innovation base on renewable energy. It serves to cultivate intelligence and promote high-level research of science and technology in the area of renewable energy.
At present, RES has 8 research divisions, namely Wind Power Research Center, Centre for Hydroelectric Energy & Engineering Research, Solar Energy Research Centre, Center for New Energy Materials and Photoelectric Technology, Biomass Energy Research Centre, New Energy Resources and Urban Environment Research Centre, Hydropower Resettlement Research Center and Experimental Teaching Centre.
There are 92 faculty members in RES, including 18 Ph.D. supervisors, 23 professors, and 30 associate professors. 98.5% of them hold doctorate degrees and many are well-known experts in their research fields. One professor is the chief scientist of the national “973” program, two professors have won the National Project of “Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand” Talents, two faculty members have been granted the National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 5 scholars have been selected for Project of Supporting Outstanding Talents in the New Century by the Ministry of Education. RES also makes great efforts to attract young talents. The research groups are well structured by major and age, the highly motivated professionals have created a strong academic atmosphere for teaching and studying in RES.
For undergraduate study, RES has launched 4 bachelor programs; these are “Hydraulic and Hydro-Power Engineering”, “Hydrology and Water Resources”, “Renewable Energy Science and Engineering” and “New Energy Materials and Devices”. In addition, there are 3 major directions that have been offered under the program of “Renewable Energy Science and Engineering”, which are “Wind Power”, “Solar PV” and “Bio-mass Energy”. In the current academic year, 1272 undergraduate students have been enrolled in RES.
