Introduction

Master Program in Hakka Language and Literature of the Department of Hakka Language and Social Sciences was established in August 2004. We enrolled ten students every year, targeting at people who like to address themselves to Hakka language and literature studies. Our Master of Arts program aims to equip students with essential theoretical skills to conduct research on Hakka language and Hakka literature, which includes early traditional records, popular works (stories, ballads, nursery rhymes, riddles, etc.), as well as early children’s books of old-style private school. Hakka language plays a vital role in almost every aspect of Hakka culture and is our focus of study at the present time.

  • Linguistic Theories and Methodology

  • A Study of Hakka Phonology
  • Hakka Lexicology
  • Etymology: Hakka Chinese Character
  • Chinese Historical Phonology
  • History of Chinese Character and its Phonology
  • Chinese Morphology

Requirements for Graduation

Required credits: 33 credits (including 9 credits for required courses, 9 credits of compulsory elective courses (one course in three fields--phonology, vocabulary and written language studies), 15 credits of elective courses)

Duration of Study: 1-4 years

Other requirements: Qualifying Examinations, Pass an oral defense of a thesis, Degree Examination.
