Introduction
The combination of digital and physical technologies that are driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is changing our world. Our MSc Engineering Project Management offers the opportunity to develop management skills to implement technical strategies in projects across the engineering sector.
This course explores specialist challenges to the key objectives of innovation and sustainability in the delivery of new engineering systems, products, enterprises, and services for Industry 4.0. Throughout this course, you’ll develop specialist skills for the management of multidisciplinary projects along with techniques to manage the operational and developmental phases of product and system life cycles.
Our teaching staff come from a range of professional backgrounds with active networks in various sectors, from manufacturing engineering and environmental industries to railways and built environments. Together, this multidisciplinary group will help you to become a rounded professional, ready to apply for engineering management roles in organisations across the world.
Optional placement year
This course is available with an optional industrial placement year, giving students the chance to tailor their knowledge to suit a specific industry or skill set. This is an excellent opportunity to put theory into practice and gain transferable workplace skills, providing a real boost to your CV when you graduate.

Course Information
This course brings together the latest practice in project management with expertise from engineering disciplines. As well as developing a strategic perspective on engineering challenges and opportunities, you will acquire industry-recognised engineering management expertise as defined by the Association for Project Management [APM] (in the UK) and the Project Management Institute [PMI] (in the USA). This will give you a great perspective on what employers around the world need and want. Put simply, it’s a qualification that gets you ready for work.
You will be studying the latest Industry 4.0 approach to smart systems technologies and systems engineering, covering design with innovation and sustainability in mind.
You’ll be building your management expertise by establishing the fundamentals, from cost and risk management to procurement systems and strategic communication, and then you will move on to look at the key principles and techniques associated with the successful delivery of multi-disciplinary projects.
We deliver the Managing Projects in the Energy Sector unit in collaboration with our triple accredited Business School. This means, for this unit, you’ll learn alongside Business School masters students, with the opportunity to network, share knowledge and gain insights from peers across the University.
Finally, your individual research project gives you the chance to put all the theories and skills you’ve been learning into practice.
Year 1
You'll study nine core units over this one-year course, including an individual research project.
If you choose to apply to study full-time with an optional industry placement year, the MSc course will be two years and you'll start your placement after completing all the core units in year one.
