Introduction
This program will provide the students with cutting-edge knowledge in exploration and mining geology used by earth scientists active in the exploration and mining of metals and minerals.
The program covers aspects necessary for an environmentally aware geoscientist. The teaching is in English and the program offers two specializations for the students; exploration and environmental geosciences. The Luleå University of Technology is the northernmost technical university in Scandinavia. It is located 100 km south of the Arctic Circle at the Gulf of Bothnia which is a part of the Baltic Sea. The location gives you an unprecedented opportunity to experience the Nordic milieu with its contrasts between the gleaming winter, and the warm, sunny summer – the land of the eight seasons.
Specializations
Exploration geosciences
This specialization includes ore geology, geophysical and petrophysical exploration methods, mineral economy, and deposit evaluation. Are you interested in the global competition for securing the world’s demand for metals and non-metallic resources? Would you like to work outdoor in remote areas? Then this is the choice you should make.
Environmental geosciences
This specialization includes environmental geochemistry, environmental monitoring, and geochemical modeling among other courses. If you want to understand how geology and the environment are linked together, how nature responds to natural and anthropogenic chemical compounds, and how we monitor and remediate metal pollution, then this is the choice you should make!
We contribute to a sustainable society
The MSc program in Exploration and environmental geoscience provides an understanding and possibility to work with the global sustainability goals of Industry, innovation, infrastructure, and climate action.
You will learn why geoscience is a necessary foundation for working with society’s demand for minerals and metals which are needed for the transition into renewable energy sources, at the same time as you learn how to minimize the environmental- and climate footprint this need for natural resources comes with.
Career Opportunities
Labor market
The master's program provides skills for working as a geologist / geophysicist in the exploration and mining industry or working as a geoscientist with an environmental focus. We have networks all around the world which may offer possibilities for international MSc thesis work. If you want to pursue an academic carrier in exploration and environmental geosciences LTU is an excellent starting point.
