The 37-credit Master of Science degree program in Applied Mathematics offers specializations in either Classical Mathematics or Computer Mathematics. Classical Mathematics focuses on the foundations of modern mathematical theory, covering linear algebra, numerical methods, and complex analysis. Computer Mathematics combines the fields of mathematics and technology through courses such as logic and information, applications of analysis, linear programming and statistics. Students must complete either a thesis or prepare a topic in mathematics and deliver a lecture on that topic.

The faculty members in the Department of Mathematics are experts in areas such as topological groups, probability theory, differential geometry, number theory, dynamical systems and computer graphics, real analysis, numerical analysis, abstract algebra, combinatorics and history of mathematics.

Many of our graduates have gone on to receive PhDs from prestigious institutions. LIU Post graduates also are qualified for rewarding positions in actuarial science, insurance, finance, engineering, manufacturing, and education.

All undergraduate and graduate programs at LIU Post are registered with the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In addition to the entire University, various other academic programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Science are specially accredited by professional organizations, signifying they meet the highest standards of educational quality as determined by leaders in the field.

American Psychological Association

The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at LIU Post offers a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree and has as its basic purpose the training of doctoral-level clinical psychologists who will apply current knowledge and practice skills for the prevention and alleviation of psychological problems. The program is also committed to training students who will provide services in public sector settings to traditionally underserved groups, and provides each student with special competencies in one of three areas: family violence, developmental disabilities, or serious and persistent mental illness. The program also provides its graduates with clinical and theoretical training in two major orientations— cognitive-behavioral and psychoanalytic. The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. The program also is registered by the New York State Education Department and listed by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards and the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology as a designated institution offering a doctoral program in psychology. The program is based on the practitioner-scholar model of clinical training.

Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling

LIU Post's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was one of the first colleges in New York and one of just a handful of colleges and universities in the country to offer a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling, which establishes the standards of competence for clinical practice through the accreditation of graduate programs in genetic counseling and advances the role of genetic counselors in health care through the certification and recertification of qualified professionals. The LIU Post genetic counseling program is one of only 36 programs across the United States and Canada accredited by the ACGC.

Behavior Analyst Certification Board

As society contends with steadily increasing diagnoses of developmental disabilities such as autism, applied behavior analysis has become a vital tool for assessment and treatment. Certification in applied behavior analysis leads to a wide range of career options in a growing field that offers great promise to children on the autism spectrum and individuals with other developmental disabilities or conditions.

Students completing the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ graduate-level Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis are eligible to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Examination administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. In addition, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers a joint program with the School of Education, which satisfies the academic requirements for applied behavior analysis certification for students in the Master of Science in the special education program. Students who are enrolled in the CASE (Concentration in Autism and Special Education) program can complete the requirements for the advanced certificate in applied behavior analysis by taking Psychology 607, 651, and 657.
