Introduction

This exciting MA in Interdisciplinary Design Practice is open to anybody with a design degree or any associated discipline. It has been designed to respond to the needs of industry for graduates to gain the required combination of knowledge, skills and competencies to work within interdisciplinary teams in the design, technology, services, and cultural sectors.

This is a taught MA programme of one calendar year in duration that includes a major design project.

Finding solutions to the social, economic and cultural challenges globally requires a strategic, collaborate and interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving and design. Solving global complex problems requires designers and other discipline practitioners to be strategic, empathetic, critical thinkers, working collaboratively to make new solutions to drive future change.

What are the entry requirements?

  1. A minimum 2.2 honours degree in Design, Fine Art, Creative Media, Architecture, Humanities or other cognate degrees while also showing evidence of a strong interest/experience in design.
    Or

  1. Equivalent qualifications including the pre-NFQ NCEA National Diploma. Applications with equivalent qualifications on the European and International frameworks will also be considered. International students must exhibit proficiency in the English language.

What modules will I study?

  • Contemporary Design Issues
    This module establishes the theoretical groundwork by introducing the student to key issues in contemporary design.

  • Collaborative Practice
    This module teaches the communication and best practice skills for good collaboration and offers students the opportunity to work within interdisciplinary groups on problem-solving activities.

  • Marketing for Design
    This module introduces students to key marketing tools and allows them to develop, identify and apply these skills in practice.

  • Enterprise for Design
    This module allows students to develop their business skills in particular relation to design products and experiences.

  • Major Design Project
    The content of your major project will be developed with staff to address your individual specialisation. It can range from researching an aspect of the cultural and creative industries, developing and proposing an idea for an event or exhibition, to developing new creative business.​

What Will I Learn?

The MA will broaden participants design knowledge and develop skills in interdisciplinary practice, enterprise and marketing for design. Participants will be prepared to work confidently and competently within a variety of design and applied business contexts, as independent designers or within an interdisciplinary team. Students will learn how to collaborate effectively, and operate strategically while responding to the latest developments in the field of contemporary design issues, from local to global. Throughout the MA, students have access to an extensive list of industry professionals, creative enterprise advisors, academic faculty and creative practitioners.

Locally & Globally Connected

Currently, Limerick School of Art and Design and the LIT Institute engage actively with regionally based global companies across all sectors and have creative industry placements in Ireland, Europe and Worldwide.

Future Careers

Graduates will be prepared to work independently or as a team partner at a strategic level across a broad range of sectors. Graduates will use their interdisciplinary design skills to work in a number of pathways including individual entrepreneurial business, design studios, professional services, government and private organizations, cultural institutions, technology and services sectors.
