Introduction
The MA Media Studies consists of four different programmes in the fields of Journalism and New Media (Dutch taught), Book and Digital Media Studies, Film and Photographic Studies and Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory.

Media Studies offers four specialisations. Each specialisation explores a different medium in-depth, including how it interrelates with other media forms. You will also get the opportunity to investigate the roots of this relatively new academic field.

Applying ideas in practice
Learning at Leiden University goes well beyond the classroom. The Media Studies programmes provide ample opportunity for you to apply ideas in practice throughout the programme. You will have the opportunity to take part in projects assigned by external organisations. You may work as an intern at a landmark institution such as New York's International Center of Photography, you can network with artists, critics and curators during field trips to famous museums and institutions such as the seventeenth-century Bibliotheca Thysiana and the Antwerp Museum Plantin-Moretus, or you can do an internship with a Dutch news agency such as Volkskrant or NOS. By the time you graduate, you will have acquired both practical experience and a rich portfolio of work to show prospective employees.
Media Studies degree
Media Studies at Leiden University is an accredited degree programme. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a master’s degree in Media Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).
Curriculum
The master in Media Studies is a one-year programme with four specialisations. Each specialisation explores connections between the various media and examines both present-day and historical material.
Experiential learning
Some of the Media Studies programmes encourage students to get involved in projects for external clients. These projects provide students with the opportunity to apply ideas in practice, develop new contacts, and gain invaluable professional experience.
Examples include:
- Book and Digital Media Studies produced an open-access yearbook, TXT, on the role of reading and the book during the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media students conducted an exit poll during the national elections for the Leiden City Council. They also do fact checks for national and international

You are able to choose from four specialisations:
- Book and Digital Media Studies: focuses on the dynamic process of the transmission of knowledge and information through handwritten, printed, and digital texts.
- Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory: is devoted to the study of literature from a comparative and theoretical perspective.
- Film and Photographic Studies: offers you a challenging academic study in the field of ‘lens-based’ media, comprising photography, film and video.
- Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media (taught in Dutch): provides you with strong editorial skills, a journalistic attitude and a strong academic background.
- All programmes are taught across two semesters and comprises compulsory courses, elective courses, and the writing of an MA thesis. or an English-taught bachelor at a Dutch
research university.
