Introduction
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Understand our natural and cultural environment to produce landscapes at a range of scales, responsive to aesthetic, ecological, social and technical requirements
- Develop the skills to provide original and practical responses to biodiversity loss and climate change
- Gain a critical understanding of the nature, scope and role of landscape architecture in a changing world. This will include the landscape architect’s role in the profession, together with an appreciation of environmental and ethical aspects
- Critically evaluate materials, processes and techniques that apply to landscape architecture. You’ll learn to integrate these into design proposals sensitively and appreciate the implications affecting landscape over time
- Build a critical understanding of how knowledge is advanced through research and practice
- Produce an original portfolio work relating to landscape architecture
- Discover opportunities to respond to environmental challenges facing today's landscape architects through live projects, collaboration and competitions

Curriculum
Teaching And Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Landscape & Urban Design Studios
Reflect on your recent work and learning needs selecting activities to help you enhance your professional development. Studio-based learning will be combined with lectures, seminars and fieldwork where necessary.
Advanced Landscape Architecture Project
Apply key research and analysis techniques, theories, strategies and design processes to an urban or rural landscape design project of interest to you.
Contemporary Landscape Architecture Theory & Practice
Prepare for professional practice as you discover the trends and issues relevant to contemporary landscape architecture, including the scope of work, methods of approach and responsibilities of practising landscape architects.

Personal Focus Portfolio
Compile a thorough portfolio that demonstrates your professional experience. Your portfolio will include a written reflection and your tutor will guide you as you determine its content.
Reflective Landscape Practice
Program Outcome
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Generate site-based planning and design proposals of a complex nature, demonstrating an understanding of current and future landscape architectural issues and originality in the application of subject knowledge.
- Evaluate and apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral, and written media to analyze, critically appraise, and communicate design proposals coherently to external audiences and associated professionals.
- Critically evaluate materials, processes, and techniques relevant to landscape architectural designs and landscape technology, integrating these into design proposals sensitively while considering management implications affecting landscape development over time.
- Develop a critical understanding of how knowledge is advanced through research and practice in both individual and group settings, producing clear, logically argued, and original written or portfolio work related to landscape architecture.
- Adopt a critical approach to understanding the role of the landscape architect about clients, other environmental and design professionals, and the landscape industry, with an appreciation of legislative frameworks, UK policy and guidance, and ethical considerations.
- Identify individual learning needs and relevant approaches to design research and landscape practice that underpin problem-solving and decision-making, and critically reflect upon their professional development.
