How to Apply

A minimum 2:1 undergraduate Bachelor’s (honours) degree

If you have a lower degree classification or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Master's or PGDip).

A 2:1 undergraduate degree is usually required in a relevant subject (for example a foreign language; English; Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Language and Communication; Psychology; a social science subject). Alternative qualifications may be considered. In order to meet the academic entry requirements for this programme you should have a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree with a final mark of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme. If you are still studying you should be achieving an average of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme.

No previous experience in language teaching is required although any experience including informal tutoring or volunteer teaching and/or observation of teaching will be taken into account in assessing your application.

All applicants are required to complete an English language awareness task. The instructions on how to access and complete the task will be detailed on King’s Apply once you begin your application for this programme. Please upload your completed task to the personal statement section of the application form before submitting it to us for consideration.

To study at King's, it is essential that you can communicate in English effectively in an academic environment. You are usually required to provide certification of your competence in English before starting your studies.

Nationals of majority English-speaking countries (as defined by the UKVI) who have permanently resided in this country are not usually required to complete an additional English language test. This is also the case for applicants who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (of at least three years duration), a postgraduate taught degree (of at least one year), or a PhD in a majority English-speaking country (as defined by the UKVI) within five years of the course start date.

We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible as we may need to request further information from you to assess your application. This is particularly important if your application is successful, and you are required to meet any conditions and/or you need a Student Visa to study at King’s.

For applicants who are currently residing in mainland China, the first application deadline is 10 January 2025 (23:59 UK time).

For all other applicants, our first application deadline is on 9 March 2025 (23:59 UK time). The final application deadlines for this programme are:

Overseas (international) fee status: 25 July 2025 (23:59 UK time)

Home fee status: 25 August 2025 (23:59 UK time)

After the first application deadline, the programme will close at any point once it is full. Please note, you will not be eligible for an application fee refund if you apply after the first application deadline, and we are unable to process further offers because places are filled and we close the course before the final application deadline.

Courses are divided into modules. You will take modules totalling 180 credits.

You are required to take the following modules:

Language Teaching Methodology (30 credits)

Analysing English for Learning & Teaching (30 credits)

Second/Additional Language Learning: Research, Theory & Practice (30 credits)

Research Methods & Dissertation in Applied Linguistics/Language Learning & Teaching (60 credits)

In addition, you are required to take two modules (30 credits) from a range of optional modules. Optional modules may typically include:

Materials Development in English Language Teaching (15 credits)

English for Academic Purposes (15 credits)

Multilingualism, Migration & Diversity (15 credits)
