Introduction

The research-oriented Master's program in Mathematics aims at students with a special interest in mathematics as an exact science who want to acquire a broad and deep knowledge of the field.

The two-year English-taught program offers basic and advanced lecture courses, "Research in Groups" courses (RiGs), and seminars. The courses cover a variety of topics of current research interests in many areas of pure and applied mathematics.

The focus of the program is to introduce students who are very early in their careers to research-oriented questions. The communication among students in seminars and RiGs is a central aspect of the program. The institute offers excellent study conditions, very personal supervision in small groups, an internationally experienced team of professors, assistants, and staff members, and a well-stocked library.

Participants finish the program with a Master's thesis.

Program Structure

The program offers an efficient platform to specialize in a number of areas of current research interest. The students can choose from a variety of lectures, seminars and "Research in Groups" courses (RIGs) which provide a solid knowledge of the field and familiarise them with the newest developments in mathematics. A special emphasis is put on "Research in Groups" courses, which give the students the additional opportunity to acquire and enhance soft skills, such as speaking and presentation techniques.

The program (120 ECTS credits in total) is divided into two parts:

  • Lectures (at least 30 ECTS), Seminars and Research in Groups (at least 20 ECTS)
  • Master thesis (30 ECTS)

The students can freely choose Lectures, Seminars, and RIGs according to their individual interests from a variety of courses offered by the institute.

Aim of the Program

"Mathematics International" is a research-oriented master's program that aims at students with a special interest in mathematics as a scientific discipline who want to acquire a broad and deep knowledge of the field. To meet these expectations the department offers a great number of advanced courses at the master's level that address topics from many areas of pure and applied mathematics.

Career Opportunities

Our graduates pursue careers in a wide range of professions. Potential employers include universities, research institutes, companies engaged in research and development, administration, as well as small and medium enterprises. Mathematicians typically engage in pure research, or work in software development, management consulting, data security, communication, or information technology.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or equivalent qualification in a similar field of study. Applicants are qualified if they can show proof of academic achievements that are equivalent to the qualification obtained in the Bachelor's degree program in mathematics offered by the University of Würzburg and that meet the requirements of the respective Master's degree program. In particular, this means applicants should have sufficiently profound knowledge in pure mathematics, i.e., at least in linear algebra, real and complex analysis, ordinary differential equations, and algebra. In particular, a Bachelor’s degree in any kind of engineering, or an unspecific Bachelor’s of science, will usually not be accepted.

Scholarships

International students can apply to numerous organizations for a scholarship, for example to the DAAD, to party-related foundations or business-affiliated institutions. You can find information on the various types of scholarships in the DAAD scholarship database, along with suitable offers.
