Introduction
The integrated Master's degree programme in American Studies / Études Anglophones at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Université de Bourgogne, Dijon (France) offers a course programme with a focus on literature and cultural studies, in which in-depth knowledge of the various manifestations of Anglophone societies in their respective literary, historical, political and cultural contexts is imparted.
As such, studying a third language and literature in a Franco-German context opens up a new dimension of interculturality, as content can be compared with the two other cultures, languages and literatures. In addition, the approach to the English language and American culture is very different in the two countries. This promotes intercultural reflection in a global context.
Students are offered the opportunity to research the tradition and diversification of Anglophone literatures, cultures and languages in depth. To this end, subject-specific content will initially be deepened in Mainz in order to create a broad basis for the research work in Dijon, which will be supported by seminars on literary theory.
Internships
The integrated Master of Arts American Studies / Etudes Anglophones programme requires you to complete a four-week internship - usually in the partner country.
Internships are an important interface between university and career and help you to plan your career and your studies. You will familiarise yourself with possible professional fields, apply the knowledge you have acquired during your studies in practice and can determine during the internship whether everyday working life corresponds to your professional ideas and interests. Internships also provide you with important additional qualifications, initial work experience and contacts to potential future employers.
The Haus Burgund in Mainz and the Haus Rheinland-Pfalz in Dijon provide support in arranging contacts with scientific and cultural institutions or companies in the partner region.
Studying abroad
A one-year stay abroad at the partner university in Dijon in the second year is an integral part of the degree programme.
