Introduction
The MSc Agroecology - Resilient Farming and Food Systems is jointly offered by ISARA (France) and Wageningen University (Netherlands). You have a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and agroecosystem management ? Join us !
Farming and food systems in Europe and abroad are increasingly recognised as closely linked with environmental, social and ethical issues. The challenges arising in the interface between food production and society in Europe contain many generic traits that also occur in many parts of the world. The multiple cultures, languages and political systems in Europe make this an ideal place for students to experience first hand some of these challenges and potential solutions that could be applied in their home situation.
The study programmes are aimed at international students with a strong interest in sustainable agriculture, agroecosystem management, and sustainable food systems. Students will get the opportunity to understand structure and function of complex agroecosystems. They will learn to apply a systems approach in studying, designing and evaluating agricultural systems and food production chains. The programme teaches a multidisciplinary, experiential learning approach in which natural sciences are combined with social sciences.
Admissions
Curriculum
The two-year double degree programme combines 4 semesters at 2 different universities, with an internship in the 2nd semester. The programme combines a strong research approach in resilient farming at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, with the systems approach in agroecology for agroecosystems management at ISARA, France.
The goal is to develop research competences and project management for the application of agroecological science in real-world situations.
Semester 1: Wageningen - The Netherlands
- Future of food and farming
- Transformation of food systems
- Modular skills training
- Elective courses
Semester 2: Wageningen - The Netherlands
- Elective courses
- Choose an internship or a minor from: farming systems ecology, crop and weed ecology, plant production systems, soil quality
Semester 3: ISARA - France
- Agriculture and landscape management
- Agroecological cropping practices
- World agroecosystems and agriculture use
- Management of agroecosystems
- Group project management
Semester 4: Master Thesis Co-supervised by two Universities
Action learning and action research through cooperation with farmers, food system professionals and consumers will shorten the distance between practice and theory.
The proposed programme exploits the strengths of the two co-operating institutes, adding the specialist knowledge in agroecosystems management of ISARA with the strengths in designing and evaluating organic food production chains at Wageningen.
Program Outcome
Job opportunities
Employers worldwide dealing with agriculture and/or environment such as local, regional and global institutions, extension services, development agencies and private companies (e.g. agro-food industry, consultant agencies) are seeking practical and innovative professionals who can handle complexity and change and who have excellent communication skills.
In response, we are providing students with experiential education in farming and food systems. We are educating people with an enhanced capacity of integrating scientific knowledge and skills with complex real-life situations, and we help students assess and evaluate their attitudes toward change and making a difference in the world. The goal is to educate graduates that are able to link theoretical knowledge to concrete real-life challenges, and develop autonomous learning capacity to adapt to an uncertain and rapidly changing future.
