Curriculum
Year 1: Mechanics
The Mechanics Master at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris offers students a high-level research-oriented program covering a wide range of scientific domains from fundamental to applied mechanics.
The research areas cover smart structures, environmental sciences, complex fluids, turbulence, waves, and metamaterials.
A specialized track in biomechanics and biomedical engineering provides a core training in biomechanics and biomedical engineering and requires the completion of two laboratory rotations, and a year-long design project.
Year 2: Biomechanics & Biomedical Engineering specialization
The Biomechanics & Biomedical Engineering Year 2 Master program specialization provides students with state-of-the-art training in the exciting field of biomechanics and biomedical engineering - the application of physical science and engineering concepts and technologies for the life sciences and for understanding, diagnosing, and treating disease. Applicants are expected to have strong backgrounds in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics and a desire to contribute to the upcoming revolutionary changes in the life sciences and medicine. No background in biology is necessary.
The Biomechanics & Biomedical Engineering offes students a highly interdisciplinary curriculum focused on five specific tracks:
- Biophysics and Biomechanics
- Imaging and Image-Based Modeling
- Sensors and Devices
- Biomaterials
- Mechanical Engineering for clinicians: this track is a joint program between Institut Polytechnique de Paris and the Université de Paris and is intended for clinicians (i.e. medical doctors).
Graduates of our program will be future leading engineers, researchers, clinicians and entrepreneurs who will develop innovative solutions to tomorrow’s life science and biomedical engineering challenges.
Year 2: Other specializations
- Water, Air, Pollution and Energies
- Fluid Mechanics
- Solid Mechanics

Career Opportunities
Career
On completing the second year of the Master, students in the Biomechanics & Biomedical Engineering specialization will be equipped for doctoral studies or for industrial research and development positions or industrial opportunities in the medical device, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries.
Graduates of the Water, Air, Polution and Energy specialization will be equipped to apply for a PhD or to companies or agencies focusing on environmental problems and/or evaluating environmental or climatic risk or dealing with management and optimization of natural resources or renewa ble energies.
Most students of the Fluid Mechanics and the Solid Mechanics specialization pursue a PhD in an academic or industrial laboratory, while others directly join the research and development team of a public or private company.
