Introduction
Our rigorous one-year degree program will help you develop a foundational understanding of the U.S. healthcare system, develop solid business and leadership skills, and gain hands-on experience in the field.
Through a unique partnership between the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Kelley School of Business, we develop innovative healthcare leaders with skills and principles to serve the greater good, contribute to the creation of an equitable and healthy society, and actively shape a sustainable healthcare environment.
We prepare students for leadership roles in organizations across the healthcare industry, including hospitals, healthcare consulting firms, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies, insurance, and long-term care facilities. No prior experience, industry knowledge, or GRE score is required.
Is the MSHM Degree for You?
Our program is designed for anyone interested in building a competitive advantage for entry- and mid-level management positions in the healthcare industry, including:
- Current undergraduate students
- Students planning to take a gap year before applying to a health professions school (medical school, dental school, etc.) who want to build the skills necessary to run their own practice
- Early career professionals with an interest in healthcare management, regardless of previous experience
- Mid-careerists ready to take on positions of increasing responsibility, including those leading teams for the first time
Executive track
For professionals with at least four years of prior experience, we offer an executive track which is online except for one week on our Bloomington, IN campus. This track is intended to be completed in two years, but can be extended based on the needs of the student.

Curriculum
Skills-based Curriculum
We worked with more than 50 healthcare leaders from across the industry to identify the skills our graduates need and built our curriculum to meet them. In just one year, you’ll learn to make sound, data-driven decisions using healthcare management best practices and graduate ready to take on a leadership role.
Start the summer with a six-credit-hour jumpstart course at the Kelley School of Business, which will help you to develop a solid foundation for your graduate coursework. Your remaining two semesters will consist of 12-15 credits, including an optional five-day intensive course in the spring set in Washington, D.C., leading up to graduation in May.
The Washington Campus Experience| optional
Learn how to ethically and effectively influence the public policy process through our intensive educational and professional development course in Washington, D.C. Program Outcome
Healthcare Literacy
Reimbursement structures, multiple payer groups, and regulatory bodies create a complex system in which healthcare leaders must operate. Knowledge of these systems is necessary to inform business strategy, formalize organizational relationships, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Business Acumen
A foundation in core business areas of finance, marketing, accounting, operations/supply chain, organizational behavior, and strategy is necessary to ensure that healthcare leaders are able to be responsible stewards of resources.
Problem-Solving
Healthcare leaders deal with a host of complex issues, including service delivery problems, management, and people problems, logistics, maintenance, and resource allocation problems. Healthcare leaders rely on a methodical problem-solving approach.
Leadership Skills/Emotional Intelligence
This is the demonstrated ability to inspire individual and organizational excellence, create a shared vision and successfully manage change to attain an organization’s strategic ends and successful performance. Students will demonstrate interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for lifelong career success. These skills reflect effective self-assessment, communication, and collaboration within an organization.
Data and Analytics Competency
Close to 70 percent of healthcare leaders say that health IT tools are “essential” for organizational growth and improving the consumer experience, as revealed by a survey from SAP and Oxford Economics. Data is at the heart of decision-making at all levels of healthcare organizations. This skill enables leaders to make decisions based on the collection, appraisal, and analysis of data.
Career Foresight
Define a personal career vision and exhibit behavior to achieve it. To quote Stephen Covey, we will “Start with the end in mind.”
