Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly revolutionising various societal sectors, presenting us with the urgent task of designing these systems responsibly. Consequently, the demand for highly qualified professionals who can operate at the intersections of computer science, sustainability and ethics is steadily rising.
Our master's degree programme in Engineering Responsible AI Systems* has been developed to meet these exact needs. Our innovative programme equips you with the skills to develop and evaluate AI systems for various industries, integrating ethical, regulatory and sustainable principles throughout the process.
AI is playing an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives. Our master's degree programme in Engineering Responsible AI Systems responds to this trend by focusing on the development of advanced AI systems that respect ethical guidelines, transparency, and environmental sustainability.
AI Meets Ethical Considerations
With all the hype around AI, it is essential to address the ethical aspects of these emerging technologies. The field of AI ethics deals with the safe and ethical application of AI technologies. This includes issues such as data privacy, the avoidance of biases, and the necessity for transparency.
Through the principles of responsible AI, we ensure that technological development aligns with ethical standards and minimises potential negative impacts. This, in turn, maximises trust and societal acceptance.
Building on this, explainable AI aims to make complex decisions made by AI systems understandable, especially in highly critical areas such as medicine, finance, and public administration.
Given the increasing regulatory requirements, such as the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA), there will be a growing need for professionals who can assess and evaluate the technical and societal impacts of AI systems and implement the appropriate technical and organisational measures.
All these aspects are covered comprehensively in our programme.
AI for a Better World
How can industrial processes be optimised? What opportunities arise in waste management and recycling? Green AI provides an answer: during your studies, you will focus on the development of resource-efficient AI systems that support sustainable and clean technologies.
Equally essential in this context is sustainable AI, which aims to minimise the environmental impact and carbon footprint of AI systems. This principle is, of course, firmly embedded in our curriculum.
Expertise in a Dynamic Environment
Our programme is designed for graduates of technical bachelor's degree programmes as well as professionals with practical experience in the technical field who want to become experts in developing responsible AI systems.
Collaborations with research institutions and companies ensure a wide applicability of the acquired knowledge across various industries.
Upon completion of the programme, you will have a wide range of opportunities: thanks to the international orientation of the programme, job prospects will be available both domestically and abroad.
AI and Entrepreneurship
Tip: Do you want to apply your skills during your studies and start your own business? Our Founders Lab could be the perfect partner for you. As part of our start-up programme, you will receive support from our experts to help you realize your business idea.

Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
Unfortunately, our university does not award scholarships for reduced tuition fees. However, any student with an excellent academic record (performance in examinations and other assessments) has the opportunity to receive a merit-based scholarship once during their degree programme.
Just like students at traditional Austrian universities, you can also apply for student aid or other state or private grants.
Curriculum
In our programme, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge to understand AI systems and tackle technical, ethical, and environmental challenges. Here is an overview of the key topics.
Computer Science and Mathematics
After completing the programme, you will have expertise in the mathematical, statistical and technical foundations of AI technologies. You will be equipped to design, develop and critically evaluate innovative AI systems.
Your skills will encompass the application of advanced mathematical models and statistical methods to create technological solutions and promote responsible AI development.
AI Ethics
After graduation, you will actively apply ethical considerations in the development and use of AI. You will identify challenges such as data privacy, biases in data, and social justice, and develop technical solutions to ensure transparency, data quality and fairness.
You will promote the responsible and equitable integration of AI into society, contributing to the advancement of good scientific practice.
Green and Sustainable AI
As an AI expert, you will actively consider the environmental impact of AI and develop models and algorithms to reduce the energy and resource consumption of AI systems. You will have expertise in the energy-efficient design of hardware and software and will be capable of planning, implementing, and evaluating AI systems regarding environmental protection and sustainable development.
You will particularly engage in developing AI systems for industry, waste management and recycling, aiming to strengthen the circular economy and drive process optimisations.
Explainable AI
Upon completing your studies, you’ll be adept at identifying and evaluating vulnerabilities in AI systems to enhance risk management strategies. You will master explainable AI, enabling you to develop and apply methods that make complex decisions of AI systems understandable. This ensures that the functioning of AI systems is easy to understand for a broad audience.
This is particularly relevant in critical applications, such as medicine or finance, where increased attention must be paid to compliance with relevant regulations in the future.
Leadership and Communication Skills
Throughout your studies, you will cultivate leadership qualities and teamwork skills within multidisciplinary and intercultural teams. Your ability to effectively communicate complex scientific ideas will significantly contribute to the development of innovative solutions.
