Introduction

Study a Master's in Painting in the Netherlands

Are you keen to gain more insight into the innovative potential of painting? Do you want to know how to grow as an artist who relates to a medium that has been reinvented many times and in different places in the world? Then come study in our Master's in Painting.

All over the world, painting has been reinvented as a response to political changes, the digitisation of society, the urge for a postcolonial perspective and the critique on the current runaway art market. Alongside its emphasis on materiality and ideation, the Painting programme responds to these developments by continually seeking a dialogue between different viewpoints on the past, present and future. Different viewpoints also on perception and cognition, image and language, stable and unstable media, old and new technologies, and in a broader sense on art and science, and global and local forms of society.
Taking a painterly and critical approach means harnessing materiality to create new links and associations, by combining ideation and materiality, transforming your ideas into unexpected, meaningful, and powerful images. Together with your fellow students you will explore, share, and reflect on a diversity of views and ideas, learning from each other.
You’ll find yourself in the company of students from different countries and cultures and various backgrounds, who all share a fascination for painting. Together you’ll develop a critical view of the world. Group learning will foster your artistic vision as well as your understanding of the impact of your work on society. You will grow as a professional artist in a rapidly changing society.
