Introduction

Do you want to broaden your understanding of African countries and their cultures? The M.A. program in African Studies at HLS is designed for students who plan to pursue careers in government, international relations, or another professional field. Our faculty are engaged in a wide variety of research and teaching throughout all regions of the continent, as well as across disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. We also offer career resources and work one-on-one with students to find internships and study abroad opportunities.

Tailor your degree

The program--which normally takes two years to complete—gives you the flexibility to tailor coursework to your needs while requiring you to develop expertise in a particular topic or region.

Expand your language skills

Students are required to complete at least four semesters of an African language. This requirement can be waived by demonstrating equivalent competence through an exam. The African Languages Program offers courses in Akan/Twi, Bamana, Kiswahili, Wolof, Yoruba, and Zulu during the academic year.
