Our Master's degree in Smart Buildings in Smart Cities provides you with comprehensive basic and practical specialist knowledge in the areas of building, and urban and neighbourhood development. Pollution, population changes, resource scarcity – smart cities and buildings can make significant contributions to solving all of these problems.
Cross-disciplinary expertise plays an equally important role in your degree as do social and communicative skills. During your course, you will gain the ability to understand at region levels, respond at city levels, and act at district and building levels.

Career Opportunities
Smart City processes are shaped by a strong interdisciplinary nature, requiring networking with numerous experts from the most various of disciplines with the aim of optimal overall results. In order to achieve this network, high level coordinators, with a relevant basic knowledge from each individual discipline, have to have an interfacing position in this process.
As Smart Cities graduates, you are in a position, to take on such positions, as well as, in addition, being self-employed consultants. Besides the work as a coordinator in the Smart City process, you, as graduates, demonstrate having the necessary knowledge concerning all the various aspects required to work in the various sectors of the building and energy industry: This range spans from the planning office (building services, building physics, architecture, spatial planning) through authorities and energy suppliers to building companies, industry and supply firms. Depending on job experience and additional qualifications you can work in middle or senior management positions or run your own projects.
Curriculum
Study content and focus areas
Your first year of studies at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences will be devoted to understanding and responding. Bridging people, nature, and the environment, you will gain comprehensive expertise in intelligent buildings and smart cities.
The second year of studies will give you the competence to act in the field of complex urban planning, expanding your knowledge.
In the second part of your Master's degree, you will choose one of two main areas:
- Integrated energy systems– renewable energy systems, storage technologies, and smart grids; networking all consumer structures in a city
- Building and neighbourhood renewal– energetic building and neighbourhood renovation; technical, demographic, economic, urban, and economic issues
Good to know: During the course of your studies, you can acquire additional skills through additional courses. For example, on completing our Master's degree in Smart Buildings in Smart Cities, you will be credited with part of your competence examination as a builder.
Program Outcome
As a graduate, you will have knowledge of networked, interdisciplinary approaches to both new buildings and neighborhoods as well as the renovation or conversion/expansion of existing structures. The focus of the activities is on the integration of buildings into the higher-level structures of smart cities and smart grids, on the networking of building structure and building technology, on increasing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings and districts - in each case with the best possible increase in comfort and the Functionality for users.
Once you have completed your studies, you also have the opportunity to start a doctoral program at a technical university in Germany or abroad.
