Introduction

MScOSH

The MSc in Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) is a comprehensive and in-depth course covering the management, economic, legal and technical aspects that relate to the hazards of the workplace environment. It is targeted at graduates with an engineering, numerical, business, psychology or health-related background and seeks to provide the basis for students to be able to define and explore their chosen Master Thesis.

Objectives & Outcomes

General Objectives

  • To develop in students a detailed understanding of the key concepts underpinning occupational safety and health;
  • To provide an in-depth knowledge of the manner in which employers may achieve and maintain high standards of occupational safety and health;
  • To provide a Postgraduate program in Safety Management to students from a diverse academic and professional background (engineering, management, psychology, health);
  • To ensure that students understand the locus of OHS within Enterprise Risk Management and Corporate Governance and the need to integrate the management of safety and health into all levels of responsibility in an undertaking;
  • To ensure that students understand the need to approach occupational safety and health risks primarily through the use of preventative means

Specific Objectives

  • To create a new generation of OSH professionals, trained within a program tailor-made according to the professional qualifications of the National Legislation (Safety and Health of the Workplace Laws of 1996 – 2011 ) as well as EU relevant legislation;
  • To promote research on safety;
  • To promote safety culture in society generally and employing organizations in particular;
  • To create a unique course that will attract Postgraduate students from the wider SE Europe and Middle East areas;
  • Create a generation of safety scientists and professionals, able to provide solutions for modern safety issues (oil and gas, critical infrastructure etc)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates should be able to:

  • Plan, develop and deliver in conjunction with an organization’s management a holistic safety management system, tailor-made for the needs and challenges of a specific work environment;
  • Identify possible (occupational) safety/health risks and evaluate them by applying the correct risk assessment methodology;
  • Implement appropriate health and safety measures (further to successful risk assessment) for all electrical, fire, chemical, environmental, acoustic, biological, thermal, ventilation and vibration risks;
  • Assess correctly all human and psychological factors that could affect health and safety in the occupational environment and successfully implement appropriate and performance-based measures;
  • Master, develop and implement new safety technology; follow and lead in the safety dimensions of developing markets (e.g. oil and gas, critical infrastructure) ;
  • Work as a member of the health and safety function and in project groups and be able to lead these when needed;
  • Communicate health and safety policy, strategy and specific issues and requirements throughout the organization
