Introduction
The level of education required for success in the accounting profession is rapidly increasing. This trend is particularly pronounced in public accounting and taxation.
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, Utah Association of CPA's and many other professional organizations strongly endorse graduate accounting education. In response to these demands, the School of Accounting offers the Master of Accounting (MAcc) degree.
Requirements
Instruction builds on the broad education students have received in undergraduate accounting programs. We emphasize the analytical and communication skills essential to successful accounting careers, as well as technical proficiency. We tailor study to fit our students' career objectives, with students choosing a study emphasis in either Tax, Information Systems or Financial Accounting/Auditing.
Students wishing to enter the MAcc program must hold a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from colleges or universities nationally accredited by the AACSB or have completed course work equivalent to our MBA Core and undergraduate accounting courses.
The University of Utah MAcc program fulfills the educational requirements of the Utah State Division of Occupational & Professional Licensing for CPA licensing.
The School's MAcc students have a number of opportunities for educational experiences outside the classroom, including a strong Beta Alpha Psi that has always received "superior chapter" ratings. Accounting students have many other opportunities to learn outside the classroom, such as The Lassonde New Venture Development Center. DESB's Smart Start program provides an opportunity to participate in a mentoring relationship with a member of our business community.
Every year the incoming MAcc students participate in a service day called the MAcc Challenge. The last two years the School has worked with LifeCare, a local volunteer coordination service, to paint houses. This project teaches MAcc students the value and importance of community service. At the same time, they develop teamwork skills and form friendships within their cohort, getting their year together as MAcc students off to a great start.
