Created in 1973 by Mexico’s federal government, the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education at Ensenada, Baja California (CICESE) has become, over the past three decades, one of the most important research centers in the country.

CICESE is one of the 27 research centers coordinated by Mexico’s National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and is a recognized scientific institution at a national and international level. Its main goal is to generate knowledge that may contribute to the solution of problems that affect Mexico’s social and economic environment. Its graduate programs rank among the best in the country, and some programs are leaders in Latin America.

Marine knowledge Since 1980, the graduate program in Marine Ecology has trained scientists who have excelled as researchers and professors in higher education institutions, as well as government employees and private sector entrepreneurs. The objective of the program is to train highly trained individuals to carry out theoretical and applied studies, contribute to the solution of environmental problems, and play a leading role in the advancement of scientific knowledge on various ecosystems. The lines of research range from the molecular and cellular scale to the sphere of communities and ecosystems. The main research areas are grouped into four lines of knowledge generation and application: Ecology of Coastal and Ocean Ecosystems Biological and fisheries oceanography. Use and conservation of marine resources. Biogeochemical processes and global change. The program includes compulsory and elective subjects for master's students, while courses for doctoral program students are established based on their research interests and in agreement with their thesis committee.

Master In Marine Ecology

A long-range crop The breeding of aquatic species has not stopped growing. It is an activity that generates food, raw materials, and industrial products all over the world, but which in Mexico takes on special importance since it is one of the five countries with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. With more than 5.1 million square kilometers of marine surface alone, our country has a potential based on hundreds of plant and animal species. Thanks to this, the study of organisms from microalgae to fish allows the production of food more efficiently, both for the national market and for export. And because generating knowledge in the field of genetics, molecular biology, virology, among many others, is a permanent need for this sector, higher education institutions assume their role of providing tools to promote and strengthen it. Accordingly, the Master of Science in Aquaculture trains qualified people who, from the academic, governmental, or productive sectors, promote the growth of this sector. The knowledge that is developed in the coming years will be decisive to increase the quality of the food and products that we offer to Mexico and the world.

Master of Science in Aquaculture

The Master of Science in Nanoscience Program is an inter-institutional program, the result of a collaboration between CICESE and UNAM. It is a flexible and dynamic plan that is related to the tutors' research lines and is adapted to the academic background and interests of the students. This scheme allows the student to take courses from other postgraduate courses when they are included in their personal study plan and are approved by the Council for the Graduate Program in Nanosciences (CPP). The master's program consists of a minimum of 54 credits in courses and the development of a research project that must be reported in a thesis and defended before a committee. Of the total credits of the study plan, 12 correspond to compulsory courses, 42 credits (as a minimum) in elective courses divided into basic courses (24 credits minimum) and advanced courses (18 credits minimum). The estimated study time is 6 semesters. During the first three semesters, the student must complete 54 credits in courses, according to the study plan. Some courses have prerequisites, so it is important that the student and their academic advisor plan their curriculum taking these aspects into consideration.
