Introduction
The division of the three-semester follow-up master's study program Civil Engineering - Water Management and Water Structures is based on the tradition of long-term study programs at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Brno University of Technology (hereinafter “BUT Faculty”). The Czech Republic (hereinafter the “CR”) and the European Union (the “EU”).
The content of the study program is designed to meet the requirements of:
- Act No. 111/1998 Coll., on Higher Education and on the Amendment to Other Acts, as amended (hereinafter referred to as the “Higher Education Act”),
- Government Regulation No. 274/2016 Coll., on Standards for Accreditation in Higher Education,
- Government Regulation No. 275/2016 Coll., on Education in Higher Education
all in accordance with the methodological materials of the Board of the National Accreditation Office for Higher Education and the documents of the Brno University of Technology (hereinafter “BUT”) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering of BUT.
The study program is taught in the Czech language in a full-time form of study and is designed for graduates of bachelor's degree programs at universities and non-university technical universities in the Czech Republic and the EU. The content of the course builds primarily on the knowledge of graduates of the four-year bachelor study program in Civil Engineering, specializing in Water Management and Water Structures at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the BUT. The study program also enables student mobility and is part of a study at other selected universities with a similar focus.
The study program is aimed at gaining knowledge and knowledge in theoretical and engineering disciplines in the field of water management and water structures. The content of the study program is theoretically focused on subjects with examples of practical applications. Compulsory courses are the basis of the student's expertise, focusing on selected topics from landscape water management, municipal water management, and water structures with links to the entire construction industry, as well as to ecology and the environment. Compulsory subjects form the basis for compulsory optional subjects that extend the student's expertise. The study is completed with subjects of legal and managerial basis.
The graduate will acquire professional knowledge at a high level and in the required quality, which will be applied in practice in the design, implementation, reconstruction, and operation of water structures in the field of water management.
After passing the final state examination, the graduate is entitled to use the title “engineer” (abbreviated to Ing. before the name).
Keywords: Civil Engineering, Building Constructions, BUT, master
Program Outcome
The graduate of the follow-up Master's degree program in Civil Engineering is able to orientate in professional issues and is fully professionally prepared for the performance of the profession and for its successful application, especially in construction practice.
Professional experience of graduates of the follow-up Master's degree program in Civil Engineering in practice is possible at various levels of managerial, managerial, and managerial positions in the construction industry, in design offices, and at implementation companies. It can also be used in research and development. He can also be employed in the state administration and administration. also in companies producing and supplying products and structural components for buildings. He can also teach professionally in the field of education at secondary schools. universities. The necessary qualifications for this can be obtained directly from the faculty within the framework of lifelong learning of additional pedagogical studies, or. also with another institution that provides this education.
Graduates also have the prerequisites for their professional career in practice as a private entrepreneur in construction or as self-employed.
Gaining knowledge of English and other recommended world languages offered by the faculty during the studies creates the conditions for students to complete part of their studies at foreign universities within the Erasmus + project and after graduation, they also have the possibility to apply abroad.
Attained education enables the graduate of the master's degree program to gain authorization as an authorized builder, or technician, but above all as an authorized engineer awarded by the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians in Construction.
A graduate of the Civil Engineering Master's program may continue his / her vocational education with a doctoral program (eg DSP Building Construction or DSP Building Construction) to obtain a Ph.D.
Key learning outcomes
Graduates from the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering have gained highly specialised (theoretical and professional) knowledge within their studied field. They are capable of applying this knowledge in the solution of problems within the given field of study. They are entitled to use the title "inženýr" (abbreviated to Ing.) before their name.
They are capable, within the scope of the skills they have gained, of independently solving even demanding specialised problems and are thus prepared for work as an engineer in industry. As a highly-qualified specialist they are able to hold high engineering and managerial posts and successfully perform the functions required of them, and are equipped with the prerequisites for the solution of even complex technical problems, and not only during the comprehensive design of structures, but also during the preparation and realization of such structures.
Within the scope of their competence (after gaining the required amount of work experience), graduates from the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering can gain certification. They are capable of managing complex technical or specialised activities or projects and take responsibility for their quality. They are also able to take responsibility for the professional management of individuals and groups.
Career Opportunities
Mastering the theoretical and vocational subjects allows the graduate of the Civil Engineering study program to orientate in professional issues, and is fully professionally prepared for the performance of the profession and for its successful application, especially in construction practice. It is a branch specializing in the field of building design, building technical equipment, concrete and masonry structures, metal and timber structures, and building mechanics.
Specifically, it is able to prepare project documentation of building constructions, and technical equipment of buildings, to prepare land-use planning documentation and relevant parts of land-use planning documentation, to carry out static and dynamic calculations, building physics calculations, and simulations, construction of the environment, lead the implementation of building construction, perform authorial or technical supervision of the implementation of building construction, representing the builder, respectively. on the basis of authorization in territorial, construction, or occupancy permit proceedings, to perform professional functions in state administration bodies, etc. The graduate has acquired the latest scientific and technical knowledge in a complex of their mutual relations. He is able to apply the acquired knowledge in the whole area of building construction.
In practice, the graduate of the follow-up Master's degree program in the field of Building Construction in practice is possible at various levels of managerial, managerial, and managerial positions in the construction industry, in design offices as well as in implementing companies.
According to internal statistics, the long-term employability of graduates of the current master's degree program in the field of building construction (without continuing studies) is 95–100% within six months of graduation. The general applicability in practice is practically 100% and is also supported by FAST BUT in the form of joint meetings of last year's students with future employers with whom they cooperate in the long term. It can be assumed that the applicability of graduates of the proposed Civil Engineering study program will be similar.
A graduate of the master's degree program has the opportunity to continue studying the doctoral degree program, which leads to obtaining the academic degree doctor.
Access to further education
Graduates may continue their education further through a doctoral study programme, where they may gain the title Ph.D. With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialised area they can study for a doctorate either in the Czech Republic or abroad.
