Introduction
Grow your understanding of educational leadership within a broad context and explore and critique varying approaches to driving education forward.
Whatever educational setting you work in, or aspire to work in, our MA Education with Leadership and Management offers the opportunity to apply educational leadership and management theory to practice and enhance your leadership, research and operational skills.
Leadership and management in education have never been more important. Enhance your professional knowledge through continuous development as a self-critical learner and collaborative participant in your own learning.
You’ll explore both national and international research in educational leadership and related fields, learn to reflect on the connections between theory, policy and practice, as well as carry out your own project. We’ll support you in enhancing your critical thinking and creating sophisticated academic arguments.
With the opportunity to tailor your studies and carry out research to focus on your particular interests, you'll certainly find opportunities to link the new theories you learn with your everyday practice. By studying with us, you’ll learn to question and justify your everyday actions, increasing your own enjoyment and job satisfaction, as well as improving the pupil or student experience in your place of work. You’ll have the benefit of studying alongside other postgraduate students across our range of education courses, offering an enriched experience and the opportunity for greater networking.
Besides specialist tutors, who have a wealth of experience and expertise, you’ll benefit from guest lecturers. No prior experience in leadership and management is necessary for this course, although experience in these areas will afford a greater application and evaluation of the principles taught. Part of the assessment for this course requires reflection upon and analysis of a current place of work within a wider educational context, although this does not need to be your own.
This course is offered full-time in both January and September, applicants joining with credits from a PG Cert or PGCE can opt to take the course part-time in September.

Career Opportunities
An MA in Education with Leadership and Management may lead to career progression and new opportunities such as management, mentoring, lecturing and consultancy. This could include specialist progression in the subject, year group or phase leadership, as well as broader leadership as a deputy head teacher or principal/head teacher. Early career teachers who take the course may progress to become specialist coordinators.
International students who are teachers, lecturers or head teachers may develop their skills, extend their knowledge and advance their careers by studying this course in the UK.
Those who progress from a full-time academic course in Primary Education Studies will enhance their CV with a higher level award that includes both deeper knowledge of the subject and added transferable skills such as independent working, verbal and written communication, critical and creative thinking, presentation skills, team working, research and project management and increased self-confidence.
Successful MA students, who particularly enjoy engaging with the academic environment and who wish to pursue academic careers in lecturing and/or research, may progress to doctoral study at Anglia Ruskin University or elsewhere.
All MA students will have access to the employability support and careers advice on offer in the Faculty and wider university. This includes support with CV writing and interview skills. You’ll have the opportunity to meet others who are working in different roles in the education sector and to visit different workplaces. Full-time students will be supported to gain relevant work experience, this is most likely to be via participation in voluntary work in education settings or with other organisations working with children and families.
This course can also be the first step towards working in research or university lecturing and can be a pathway to a PhD or EdD.
