Introduction

Industrial design is the youngest of the practical disciplines. In Poland, industrial design grew out of the tradition of practical arts, establishing itself as an independent field in the late 1970s. Thus, by definition, industrial design is the design of the form and features of products intended to be marketed. Failure to recognize its uniqueness as compared to the other creative disciplines, too often leads to it being described as one of the practical arts and crafts, and consequently to it being wrongly understood by society in general.

Industrial design, as an area of interaction between production, consumption and culture, clearly fits into the strategy of economic development. It is therefore a factor that stimulates economic development and the export of industrial production. It is one of the youngest integrated design disciplines and is therefore open to ambitious young students who welcome future civilization changes, and who are sensitive to social needs and have interdisciplinary predispositions with a strong emphasis on culture. The growing importance within society of matters related to human environment and behaviour, based on the general development of civilization, opens great professional opportunities for future young designers.
