The Rwandan government provides all domestic students with free education in state-run schools. This continues through secondary schools. The goal is the current administration is to increase access to free education, however, this type of education is not available to foreign students. Foreign students will need to pay for their education. In terms of costs, it is much less expensive overall compared to Western standards, but costs are still quite affordable.
There are a variety of universities present in the country. Some of the largest and most well-known include:
- The University of Rwanda - a public school with programs in arts, social sciences, agriculture, business, education, medication, and science and technology.
- Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre Kicukiro Campus - public
- Tumba College of Technology - public
- Rwanda Teachers College - public
- Rusizi International University - public
There are also a number of private schools present here. These are often the best choice for higher education in the country since they tend to have better funding. The largest schools include:
- Adventist University of Central and East Africa
- Catholic Institute of Kabgayi
- Akilah Institute for Women
- University of Kigali
- Kibogora Polytechnic
- Kigali Institute of Management
Higher education in Rwanda tends to be available to all students who have completed secondary school. Those who wish to enroll will need to supply their own financial support and healthcare during their education.
Once a student applies at one of these universities, the university will then help the student to obtain any necessary educational visa. Generally, this process takes a month or two to complete. Applications begin coming in during the summer months with school beginning in September or October.
After graduation, students may find employment opportunities present here. The economy is growing, but jobs are not readily available. Those with advanced degrees, though, especially in the areas of education, science, technology, agriculture, and health are likely to find positions available. Students may also return to their home country with graduation recognition if they have attended an accredited school.
