Education in Myanmar

The government agency called the Ministry of Education operates the schooling system here. The educational system is somewhat complex, with various levels of higher education present here. Generally speaking, though, the universities present are run under one of two different entities, depending on location. The Department of Higher Education of Upper Burma is one and the Department of Higher Education of Lower Burma is the second. The country's educational system mimics, closely, that of the United Kingdom. This is due to the presence of the British in the region for many years.

Nearly all schools in the area are run by the government. Some now are offering private education. These private schools are often English-based. The country has more than 100 universities. The country also recognizes four international schools within its borders. This includes:

• Crane International School of Yangon CISM
• International School of Myanmar ISM

Students attending ununiversity-stylerograms will find a wide range of options to select from in Myanmar. This includes the following educational levels.

• Associates degrees - designed to provide a basic certificate of completion for students enrolling in basic educational programs. These take about a year to complete.
• Bachelor degrees - students enrolling in this school will spend between three and five years completing this program. Most enter into the workforce from this position.
• Masters degrees - This program is often for certification or a higher level of leadership in the field and takes between one and three years to complete.
• Ph.D. degrees - The doctoral level of education present here is significant and is often student-led. This type of program can take as little as a year or can span numerous years.

Popular choices in courses here include agriculture, education, technology, law, health, and business management. However, schools offer a full curriculum of choice for most students.

Travel Visas for Students

Students who wish to visit the country for the first time may only need a travel visa. It provides for 28 days of stay in the country. If you plan to stay longer, you will need to apply at a local embassy for a student visa. Requirements differ based on the country of origin, but students will need to provide at least six weeks of time for the processing of such visas. You also must have been approved to attend the school prior to this.

Climate

In this portion of Asia, many people would believe that the temperatures are unbearable, but that is not always the case. The country is near the Equator, which does lead to monsoon seasons during part of the year. However, there is also a dry zone, which is near the central Burma region. Here, very little rain occurs each year. The northern regions of Burma are often ideal for those people who want a cooler temperature, with average temperatures here at about 70 degrees F. Along the coast, though, temperatures average about 90 degrees F throughout the year.

Cost of Living

When it comes to the cost of living in Myanmar, realize that most schools provide boarding to students, but this does differ from one school to the next. Nevertheless, pricing is low by most Western standards. Hotel rooms, for example, cost about €20 per night. However, pricing is significantly higher in Ngapali Beach, Mandalay, Yangon, Inle Lake, and Bagan, the larger and more developed cities in this region. Students will need to have funds for books and accommodations during their stay, as well as for the cost of tuition, which must be paid upfront upon arrival.

Society

Though most people know this country for its overall political strife, the country has much more to offer. In particular, the country has a very strong religion-focused lifestyle. Walking throughout the location this is clear to see since there are temples throughout the region. There is also a very strong work ethic present and most of the arts and cultural components of this country come through in this manner. People work hand-in-hand here to craft beautiful clothing, pieces of art, and wood carvings.

Studying in Myanmar may be a challenge for some people. Most international students come to the area for the rich language and cultural educational opportunities. Nevertheless, the area has much more to offer, including a diverse culture filled with opportunities. Studying here may mean spending some time learning about the people and places available, but you may find it to be one of the most enjoyable of all experiences.
