Higher Education in Bangladesh
The higher education in Bangladesh focuses on general studies, business studies, engineering, medicine, or technology. There are a few other disciplines but medicine and general studies meet the greatest need in the private sector once students complete their university requirements. The higher education system is divided into 3 different types of colleges:
1) Public-government owned and subsidized
2) Private-private section owned
3) International- operated and funded by international organizations
In the past most higher education was owned by the government only. In recent years, however, there has been an influx of privately owned institutions that focus on more liberal areas of study, including women's studies and politics. While their economy is always in a state of poverty, they work hard and struggled to maintain the status quo in order to offer a good education to their residents, as well as to international students. They believe a good education is important to individual growth and opportunities and they try to improve their country in any ways possible as resources become available.
Popular Universities in Bangladesh
The University of Dhaka was established in 1921. It is one of the most sought-after colleges to attend by both locals and international students. Their focus now is primarily on the medical sciences, agricultural science, and veterinary science.
Tuition Fees
To study in an independent university in Bangladesh costs around 17,500 TK (Bangladeshi currency) for admission fees alone. The semester tuition fees per credit are:
- TK $4500 for regular students
- TK $5000 for non-degree students
Eligibility for Student Visas
Students wishing to attend school in Bangladesh must obtain a sponsorship letter from someone from the original country of origin, plus proof of bank account statements showing the ability to pay, in addition to proof of property assets and liabilities. If something is amiss, you could be charged extra fees, so make sure it is correct and up-to-date. There must be plenty of proof of financial backing. This is very important to the Bangladeshi government because they do not want to be held responsible for the loss of money if you cannot pay your bill or incur other expenses as a result of your being there. Everything must also be notarized to avoid the risk of fraud.
