About Australia

Higher Education

University courses of study include bachelor’

s degrees at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, graduate certificates and diplomas are offered in addition to master’

s and doctorate degrees. Master’

s programs are available in many disciplines including social sciences, engineering, health sciences, business, and economics. Master’

s degrees usually involve research or coursework, or a combination of both.

Why Study in Australia?

In addition to Australia being a great place to live, Australian master’

s degree programs are among the highest quality in the world. The Australian academic environment fosters innovation, creativity, and independent thought.

Australia is committed to ensuring international students have a good experience in Australia. Institutions that admit international students must adhere to a strict

set of requirements regarding marketing activities, course delivery, facilities, and student services such as legal and health services.

Universities

Four of Australia’

s 39 universities are ranked in the top 100 by the 2012-2013

Times Higher Education World University Rankings. These schools include the University of Melbourne (28th), Australian National University (37th), the University of Sydney (62nd), and the University of Queensland (65th). About 230,000 international students attend higher education programs in Australia, with about 90,000 graduates each year.

Tuition and Program Duration

International students must pay tuition and fees before beginning master’

s program studies. Typical tuition for master’

s degrees is A$15,000 to A$36,000 per year depending upon the university.

Masters degree programs take 1-2 years to complete. The course of study is usually two years after a bachelor degree;

however, a master’

s degree can be obtained in one year if the student’

s bachelor degree was obtained with honors.

Academic Year

The academic year in Australia begins in early March and runs through late November. Most schools offer two semesters each year, but some schools

use a trimester system and other schools offer summer courses from December to February.

Post-Graduate Opportunities

A master’

s degree in any discipline from an Australian institution makes a graduate more valuable to employers worldwide. In addition, recent legislation was passed that permits international graduates of Australian institutes to obtain a post-study work visa that allows them to work in Australia for up to four years after graduation.

However, although international students may be eligible to work in Australia after graduation, students should not undertake studies in Australia for the sole purpose of migration. Australia provides preferential migration treatment for individuals on a Skilled Occupations List, but the skilled migration process is separate from the student visa process. There is no guarantee that a student studying for a master’

s degree in Australia will be able to migrate to Australia.

After completing a master’

s degree, students may also continue their studies if they are admitted to a doctoral program and obtain an additional student visa.

Visa Requirements

To obtain a student visa, students must be enrolled in a full-time course that is registered with the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Students enrolled in a short course of less than 3 months can study on a visitor visa. However, only students with a student visa will have access to Australian health care and part-time work. Students may apply for a student visa once they receive a letter of offer or electronic confirmation of enrollment.

Health Insurance

Australia has a special health insurance program for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Students should buy OSHC before arriving in Australia and coverage must be maintained for the duration of the student’

s stay on a student visa. OSHC covers medical or hospital care and partially covers prescription medication and ambulances.

Tips

Much of Australia is unsettled and visitors need to be aware of the hazards associated with travel in the outback. Even when not in the outback, sun protection should be used at all times, and travelers should drink plenty of water.

Bush fires are a common hazard, especially from late spring to summer. Travelers should maintain awareness of the location of fires at all times.

Other hazards include poisonous snakes, spiders and marine stingers. These hazards can be avoided with situational awareness and appropriate clothing and footwear.

Visa Requirements

For all programs of study, you will need to apply for a subclass 500 student visa.

The Special Category visa (subclass 444) is for New Zealand nationals who wish to study in Australia.

What type of Visa do you need?

Visa name

Student Visa

Price and currency

AUD 560

The current fees in order to apply for a student visa are set to $560 AUD (~400 €). The price is always the same no matter the length of your studies. Please note that this price may vary depending on the location where you apply for your Student Visa (Australia or onshore).

Who can apply for the visa?

Anyone enrolling as an international student on a course lasting four months or more in Australia will need a student visa. In order to apply for an Australian student visa, you must have an unconditional offer of place at a university, have accepted that place in writing and paid the required tuition fee deposit. The program you choose must be between 12 and 52 weeks in order to be eligible for a student visa.

Where can you make the application?

Online system

This subclass 500 visa must be applied for using the online system.

Website:https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/

How to make the application?

Before applying for a visa, you will need to obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) or a Letter of Offer confirming that you have been accepted into a course registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions of Courses (CRICOS).

When completing your online visa application form, you will need to provide evidence that you meet:

  1. Financial requirements - the amount you need to prove you have for living costs (separate from tuition and travel) is set at AU$19,830 (~US$15,170) for a year. Alternatively, you can show evidence that your spouse or parents are willing to support you and that they earn at least AU$60,000 (~US$45,850) a year.
  2. English proficiency requirement - If you’re not from an English-speaking country (and haven’t completed at least five years’ study in an English-speaking country) you’ll need to prove you can speak English to the required level with IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, or Cambridge Advanced English (CAE).
  3. Health requirement - Some students may be asked to take a medical and/or a radiological check-up to show they are in good health (this applies, for example, to those who intend to train as a doctor, dentist or nurse). Except those from Belgium or Norway, all students are obliged to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  4. Character requirements - Australian student visa requirements stipulate that you must be of good character to enter Australia. This includes a criminal record check.

Typically, students must submit the following:

  • Completed Australian student visa application form (157A)
  • Paid visa application fee – currently AU$550 (~US$420 in most cases
  • Copy of passport biodata page (some students may be asked to physically provide their passport)
  • Certificate of Enrolment or Letter of Offer
  • Evidence of sufficient funds
  • Evidence of health insurance cover
  • English proficiency test results
  • Criminal record check results
  • Four recent passport-sized photographs

After you have assembled and scanned your supporting documents, you’ll need to create an account and apply with the online ‘ImmiAccount’ application system: https://www.border.gov.au/immiaccount.

When should you apply?

You can only make an application for an Australian student visa after you have received a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your chosen university.

Most visa applications take four weeks to process. The student visa duration depends on the program you choose. If you study in Australia for a course that is longer than 10 months and finishes at the end of an Australian academic year (usually mid-December) your visa will usually be valid until 15 March the following year. If your course is longer than 10 months and finishes in January to October, your visa will usually be valid for two months following the completion of your course.

You can renew your Student Visa as many times as you want, as long as you are enrolled in a course approved by CRICOS.

You can enter Australia on your student visa up to 90 days before your course starts. Within seven days of arrival, you must inform your education provider of your resident address, and also inform them within seven days if you change address.

  • How Students are Helping to Save Coral Reefs

    May 30, 2020

The Australian Institute of Marine Studies reports that between 1985 and 2012 the world lost 50% of the Great Barrier Reef. This vital ecosystem -- the longest coral reef in the world, stretching 2,300 kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400 square km -- provides a habitat for a wide range of wild biodiversity to thrive and live. Recent efforts by universities and students from campuses around the world are helping to save the coral reefs. The Great Barrier Reef, and other coral reefs, still have a chance, especially if students and universities continue their important work to help preserve and maintain this ecological resource.
