A city of innovation
Manchester has long been a notable city for scientific developments and innovative inventions.
Alan Turing helped to design the world’s first electronic stored programme computer in Manchester. Two Manchester-based scientists, Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, also won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for isolating the properties of graphene – a material which could revolutionise electronics, energy consumption and biomedical science. Great things really do happen in Manchester!
It’s home to many successful bands and musicians
If you ask Mancunians what their city is famous for, you can bet that they will say it’s the music scene. The city is the birthplace of many successful bands such as Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and New Order.
When you study in Manchester, you will have plenty of opportunities to see live music (COVID-19-permitting). You can see the next generation of artists refining their talents at the city's rock clubs, jazz bars, and concert venues. If dance music is more appealing to you, you can watch international DJs at the annual Warehouse Project.
A vibrant, multicultural atmosphere
Manchester is a truly diverse city. It has the third-largest Chinatown in Europe, a large Eastern European community, and a famous strip of South Asian restaurants called the "Curry Mile". Every year, the city also hosts a Caribbean carnival.
