What is the Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
Erasmus Mundus is Europe's biggest master's scholarship program. It helps the continent's eight best universities attract top students from developing countries and increase the awareness of their master's programs.
An Erasmus Mundus scholarship supports master's students looking at European issues from an interdisciplinary perspective, particularly the interplay of cultural, political, societal, and historical contemporary problems in a global context.
Each year, up to 100 students are awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. Lucky scholarship recipients can live in at least two European countries and study at three universities worldwide.
What documents do I need to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship?
Once you have checked that you fit the eligibility criteria for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship and have chosen the master's degree right for you, you will need to gather the required documents.
To apply for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship, you will need the following:
Degree certificates / Diplomas (BA, MA, etc.), including certified translations
You must show your official bachelor's degree certificate or diploma, plus a certified translation, with official stamps from the university or a notary confirming that the document is an exact original translation.
Degree certificates and transcripts of records not in English should be accompanied by a certified translation in English and the original in a pdf document.
Your degree certificates must be the official document issued by your university and show the length of your studies.
If your bachelor's degree certification has yet to be issued in time for your application, you may upload an official statement from your university confirming that you have completed all of the requirements for graduation. The document must contain your graduation date and be signed and stamped by the university. You must provide this document before the deadline for the scholarship.
Transcripts from the university
You must show the university's original full transcript (list of grades and courses), plus a certified translation. Ensure your transcript of records includes information about the length of your studies.
Evidence of English proficiency
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship candidates must show proof of English proficiency through the results of a valid test.
You may be exempt from an English proficiency test certificate if
- you are from an English-speaking country
- you have studied at an English-speaking university for at least one year
Two recommendation letters
You will need two recommendation letters written in English and signed by a referee. One of these letters must be an academic reference. The second may be from a non-academic organization, such as a former employer.
The remommedation letter should be:
- Written in English
- Be printed on the official letterhead of the institution(s) they come from and signed by the referee;
- Contain the referee's affiliation their contact details, and explain their relationship to you
- Be dated and cannot have been written longer than 1 year before the date you submit your application.
A copy of your CV
To apply for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship, you must submit a copy of your up-to-date CV, written in English. It must show your academic and professional background. Remember to include extracurricular work you have done (membership of an association, volunteering, extra courses).
Passport or identity card
Applicants to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship must upload a digital copy of their passport or identity card.
The identity card or passport must be valid and show the following details:
- full name
- photo
- date of birth
- expiration date
- nationality
- document number.
You should upload a passport if you are a student outside the European Union.

Students applying to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship must take a well-lit digital passport-sized photograph of their face.
Academic papers or thesis
Some universities will want to see relevant academic papers or theses related to your chosen master's degree. Ensure they are readily available, readable, and have a reasonable file size.
A motivation letter
Students applying to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship must write a motivation letter explaining why they are applying and highlighting key achievements and interests relevant to their master's degree. The motivation letter must be written in English and can be 5,000 characters long (including spaces).

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's scholarship applicants must ensure all their documents are in English. Research papers or theses can be in any language as long as an English summary accompanies them.
If you submit documents in other languages, your application will not be considered.
