About Syria

Higher Education in Syria

There are colleges present in Syria. However, most people here only reach grade 12 of education before entering the workforce. Unemployment is high, too, making this area very difficult to study and live in. Education is of no cost to children through age 12. Students then enter into vocational training or a three year academic program to further their education. The government carefully monitors all education in the country.

Syria is home to six state universities as well as 15 private universities. The top schools are most well known and those include:

  • University of Aleppo - state
  • University of Damascus - state
  • Syrian Private University - private
  • Arab International University - private
  • University of Kalamoon - private
  • International University for Science and Technology - private
  • Tishreen University - private

In addition to these programs, there are also higher education options available through higher institutes. The most well known in the country is the Higher Institute of Business Administration. This particular school offers options for both graduate and undergraduates.

Most educational programs are one to three years in length, though some are longer. Since enrollment in college education in Syria is not as common as it is in other countries, program options are limited. Study in economics, management, technology, and the sciences tend to be the most desirable, but other program options are also available.

The academic year generally runs from September through June, but this changes based on the school. The schools also choose the curriculum which is approved by the government. Students wishing to study higher education in Syria will need to speak the language of the school, which is generally Arabic. Some programs may be offered in English, but this is not as common as other options for students.

Foreign Students

Students who wish to enroll and participate in this type of educational program will first need to apply to the college of their choice. Once you apply for and are accepted, the university itself will help you to obtain your student visa, which allows you to remain in the country for study purposes only. Students will need to show proof of their ability to pay for their education (since education is not provided free of charge at higher institutions). You will also need to provide proof of medical coverage and healthcare.

After Graduation

Those who obtain a degree from an accredited school in Syria may wish to remain in the country. If there are opportunities available, which is not always the case, the student will need to obtain a work visa to allow them to remain. Keep in mind that this country's main focus is on improving their economy, which is in the areas of oil production, technology, and related fields. Additionally, there is a growing medical industry present here. For those who do not wish to remain, most schools outside of the country will recognize these degrees.
