The M.A. Russian and East Central European Studies is a research-oriented, interdisciplinary degree programme. Its aim is to equip students with profound knowledge of the countries and cultures of Eastern Europe by placing the focus on historical, literary and cultural studies.

You will also acquire methodological, theoretical and applied skills as you progress through your degree studies. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to learn or perfect your Czech, Polish and/or Russian language skills by making use of the relevant Language Centre courses. As the programme is focused on Eastern Europe, you will gain essential knowledge of one of the world's primary growth regions.

Language requirements

This programme can be studied entirely in English or German. Applicants need to have language skills in either language at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Accepted language English language certificates include TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent. Those wishing to study the programme in German should provide a DSH-1, TestDaF 3×4 or an equivalent language certificate. Moreover, you will need to have language skills in a Slavic language at level B2 CEFR.

Career prospects

This master's programme aims to qualify students to conduct scientific analyses independently. By providing both practical and academic skill sets, the Russian and East European Studies programme prepares students for a wide range of career paths in business, politics and the Civil Service. Graduates may also proceed to doctoral study.
In addition, the University's Perspektive Osteuropa initiative for alumni and students of degree programmes with a focus on Eastern, East-Central or South-East Europe is intended to establish links with businesses for the purpose of facilitating internships and career opportunities.
