MSc in Forensic Ballistics

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive insight of the field of firearms, ammunition and ballistic investigations.

Duration: 11 months full-time, up to 3 years part-time

Who is it for?

The course offers students a wide range of different experiences with unique facilities available to no other university in the UK.

The MSc in Forensic Ballistics course usually has around 10-15 students per year. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds, usually with a science or forensic science first degree. Many students come from abroad, especially Europe, Africa and North America.

MSc in Forensic and Explosive Investigation

This course introduces students to the investigation of explosive and CBRN crime scenes. It considers both pre and post-blast scenes, and associated scenes. The MSc also develops the student's ability to apply Forensic Intelligence and exploitation techniques, and blend it with Open Source Intelligence.

MSc in Digital Forensics

Delivered by the Forensic Institute this course focuses on providing the knowledge and skills required to conduct comprehensive forensic examinations of digital devices. Lectures are delivered by Digital Forensic practitioners and academics throughout the course, with guest lecturers coming from both law enforcement and private companies.

Duration: 11 months full-time, up to 3 years part-time

Who is it for?

This course is highly practical and technical in both delivery and assessment. It is designed to enable participants to conduct comprehensive forensic computing examinations and cutting-edge digital forensic research.

The full-time course is ideally suited to recent graduates in a related subject such as Computer Science or Forensic Science who wish to specialise in Digital Forensics. It is also suitable for those who have recently completed a BSc in Computer Forensics, Digital Forensics, Cybercrime Forensics or a related subject, who wish to deepen their knowledge, improve their skills and increase their employability in a very competitive market.

The part-time course is more suited to those already in full-time employment, such as law enforcement officers, government staff, security consultants, accountancy and banking organisations, corporate security personnel and members of associated agencies in both the UK and overseas. This programme could lead to a new career or promotion with an existing employer.

MSc in Explosive Ordnance Engineering

The course offers advanced academic background necessary for students to contribute effectively to technically demanding projects in the field of explosives and Explosives Ordnance Engineering (EOE).

Duration: 11 months full-time, up to 5 years part-time

PgCert in Sensor Electronic Warfare

This PgCert covers a selection of Electronic Warfare topics relevant to military systems, covering the specification, analysis, development, procurement, and technical management of military radar, electro-optics and infrared sensor systems.

Duration: 3 years Part-time

Who is it for?

This PgCert has been designed for officers of the Armed Forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry.

Graduates achieve a high level of understanding and detailed knowledge of military communications and sensor systems with particular regard to electronic warfare.

PgCert in Communications Electronic Warfare

This PgCert covers a selection of Electronic Warfare topics relevant to military communications systems, including the specification, analysis, development, procurement and technical management of military information systems.

Duration: 2 years part-time

Who is it for?

This PgCert has been designed for officers of the Armed Forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry.

Graduates achieve a high level of understanding and detailed knowledge of military communications and sensor systems with particular regard to electronic warfare.

MSc in Cyber Defence and Information Assurance

Designed to develop professionals who can effectively manage and exploit the threats and opportunities of cyberspace at the organisational level. The course specifically focuses on responses to serious present and emerging threats in the information domain.

Duration: Up to 5 years part-time

Who is it for?

Students will be government, corporate and critical information infrastructure staff who are one or more of the following:

  • Managers who need to understand information risk and respond to cyber threats
  • Technicians who wish to understand the operational and business context
  • Procurement staff commissioning critical or sensitive projects
  • Policy and planning staff interested in computer network and security operations
  • Personnel interested in social media and associated concepts such as cyber mobilisation
  • Those charged with accreditation and assessment of security measures

MSc in Cyberspace Operations

The Cyberspace Operations programme is designed to develop professionals to support manoeuvre in cyberspace, in contested operations and as part of integrated planning.

Duration: Up to 5 years part-time

Who is it for?

Students will be UK Military and other Government personnel charged with supporting operations in cyberspace, in their current or anticipated role. These staff may also be one or more of the following:

  • Managers who need to understand information risk and respond to cyber threats
  • Technicians who wish to understand the operational and business context
  • Procurement staff commissioning critical or sensitive projects
  • Policy and planning staff interested in computer network and security operations
  • Personnel interested in social media and associated concepts such as cyber mobilisation
  • Those charged with accreditation and assessment of security measures

MSc in International Defence and Security

This course considers some of the most pressing issues of world politics such as the causes of war and peace, the pressures and opportunities of globalisation, the threats posed by terrorism, and the problems of global poverty and injustice.

Duration: 1 year full-time

Who is it for?

This course is intended to attract students who are either currently employed in posts relating to Security Cooperation or those individuals who generally have an interest in issues pertaining to defence and security.

Students come from the following areas:

  • Serving members of the UK MOD (civilian and military)
  • Foreign MOD civil servants and members of foreign armed forces
  • Staff from other UK and foreign government departments, as well as international
  • Governmental and non-governmental organisations, who have an identified need to develop their knowledge of Defence and Security
  • Civilians with an interest in defence and security.

There is often a wide range of nationalities on the course, with a maximum of 30 places available.

MSc in Security Sector Management

This course is designed for participants to be able to develop and implement strategic security sector plans and analyse, communicate and evaluate the broader implications for related areas within state and regional frameworks.

Duration: 2 years, plus a dissertation. 1 Year Accelerated Executive Programme: 1 year, plus a dissertation. Part-time
