The University of Amsterdam offers an outstanding two-year Research Master’s programme in Psychology. This programme is designed for excellent and motivated students with a genuine interest in psychological research, who are interested in a career in academic or applied (industry) research.
The Research Master’s programme is firmly embedded in the experimental approach to psychology that characterizes the psychology programme at the University of Amsterdam. Specialised courses are taught in informal, highly interactive small groups settings. In addition to content-related courses covering all areas in psychology, the programme offers a series of advanced courses on research methods and statistics, programming and computer skills, and writing and presentation skills. Central to the Research Master’s programme are two separate research projects (Internship and Thesis). In principle, papers based on these research projects should qualify for publication in international academic journals.
Taught by international top researchers, the Research Master's programme offers a unique opportunity to further specialise in any area of psychology including:
- Brain & Cognition
- Clinical Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Methodology and Statistics
- Social Psychology
- Work and Organisational Psychology
Furthermore, the unique major-minor structure of the programme ensures that students get involved in advanced courses in at least two of the aforementioned areas of Psychology, one of which is chosen as their major. Finally, the programme has a strong international orientation. The teaching staff has an extensive international network and cooperates on a regular basis with top-level researchers across the world. Students are explicitly encouraged to spend parts of their research training abroad.
Over a two-year period, students complete advanced courses on research methods and statistics. Furthermore, students will be trained in computer skills (programming) and writing and presentation skills. During the remaining time, students will take courses in two fields of their choice and receive excellent research experience.
The programme requires two separate research projects resulting in two research papers (Research Internship and Research Thesis), the latter should be written in the form of a publishable journal article. In their first master’s year, students write their internship in close collaboration with a supervisor whereas the research thesis is carried out independently.
After graduation, students are eligible to pursue a career as a researcher at the university. Some graduates may decide to pursue a PhD programme and work towards a doctorate in disciplines that are directly related to this research programme. Graduates are also well qualified for a career in scientific research in companies and governmental organizations.
Furthermore, Research Master’s graduates may find employment as a policymaker in the public sector relevant to their field, such as government agencies, advisory boards and education.
