Curriculum

The first year of the research master offers rigorous training in the core of economics, econometrics and finance. In the second year, students specialize in their choice from the institute's many fields of research through field coursework and thesis research. Students who perform well in the programme are invited to transfer to the three-year PhD programme.

Mode of education

The programme’s first year: students complete core courses, field courses and a seminar series, where research fellows introduce themselves. These seminars allow students to explore potential supervisors and fields of specialisation. In the second year, students have to complete 30 ECTS of specialised coursework and write a thesis.

Admission criteria

The programme is a selective research master programme that is geared towards excellent and ambitious students who want to pursue a PhD in Economics at the Tinbergen Institute. Admissions are highly selective and competitive. A maximum of 30 students may enrol each year. Students are selected by the institute's Admission Board in a rigorous and careful process.

Specialisation

Tinbergen Institute offers one research programme with three specialisations (tracks): one in economics, one in econometrics and one in finance. The finance track is sponsored by the Duisenberg school of finance. The three tracks have the same structure, institutions and regulations. All tracks provide access to a three-year PhD track.
