Why are you interested in this Master? The role played by agricultural cooperatives in the world and specifically in our country is immense. It should be specified that the cooperative is a company unconditionally and stably linked to the rural environment, the farmer and the rancher, for which it exercises leadership in the local economy and in fixing the population to the territory, thus contributing to balance and management of the same, which makes them true agents of rural development. On the other hand, cooperative societies have been the guarantors of the structuring of agriculture in rural areas in many countries, especially Spain, since they constitute the main structured, organized, professionalized and stable network implanted throughout the territory, in contact with the rural environment, with the capacity to communicate and influence farmers and ranchers, which is why they can play a fundamental role in achieving the objectives.
However, the above are not the only roles that cooperatives play, since they exercise a social function: due to the condition of their members and their legal nature, the decisions of cooperatives promote democratic participation and take into account considerations that are not they derive only from economic arguments, but also from social or cultural ones. In addition, they directly or indirectly provide a lot of employment in the rural world and, finally, they maintain a latent power in the market of origin by occupying a strategic position within the agri-food chain, acting as a bridge between production, industry and trade, thus that allows the farmer and / or rancher to participate in the transformation and commercialization phases.
Following this same line, cooperative societies by nature carry out their activity under cooperative principles and values that make them exponents of socially responsible companies and, therefore, key to sustainable development. However, despite its enormous power and influence, the agri-food cooperative is still not aware of the real situation it finds itself in and the leadership position it must assume for the future.
