Program Description

Masters of Engineering

Carleton University, Faculty of Engineering and Design

Carleton offers you outstanding graduate programs, remarkable research opportunities, intriguing internships and collaborations with supportive staff and faculty. Our engineering and design graduate programs offer excellent research and practical applications related to your field of interest. A number of our programs are collaborative with the University of Ottawa through our Ottawa-Carleton Joint Institutes. (Depending on who you would like to have as your thesis supervisor, you can apply either to Carleton University or the University of Ottawa.)

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

All of our graduate programs in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering which combines the research strengths and resources of Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. At the master’s level, we offer the following degrees:Master of Engineering (Aerospace), Master of Engineering (Materials), Master of Engineering (Mechanical).

Fields of Specialization

  • Aeronautical and Space Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Controls and Robotics
  • Materials and Manufacturing
  • Solid Mechanics and Design
  • Thermal and Fluid Engineering

Civil Engineering

Our civil engineering programs are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering which gives students access to professors, courses and facilities at Carleton and the University of Ottawa.

Fields of Specialization

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Fire Safety Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Electrical and Computer Engineering program is offered jointly by the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering and the Department of Electronics in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Carleton has known expertise in this field, producing highly qualified graduates to work on projects ranging from high-speed/high-frequency circuitry to optical fiber communications. Our renowned researchers work in areas such as biomedical engineering, computing, electrical engineering, engineering systems and analysis, interactive multimedia systems, software engineering, speech/signal/image processing and telecommunications. The Electrical and Computer Engineering program is also offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Electrical and Computer Engineering which allows our students access to the largest program in Canada with resources both at Carleton and the University of Ottawa. Carleton offers a specialization in Data Science and two master’s programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering:

  • MASc in Electrical and Computer Engineering, which requires the completion of a research thesis.
  • MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering, which is coursework only.

You may also be interested in our MASc in Biomedical Engineering, which has four areas of study: Medical Instrumentation, Biomedical Image Processing, Biomechanics and Biomaterials, Medical Informatics and Telemedicine. We also offer a PhD program in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Fields of Specialization

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Computer Aided Design for Electronic Circuits
  • Computer and Software Engineering
  • Computer Communications, Distributed Systems, and Multimedia
  • Digital and Optical Communications
  • Integrated Circuits and Devices
  • Microwaves and Electromagnetics
  • Photonic Systems
  • Signal, Speech and Image Processing
  • Systems and Machine Intelligence

Environmental Engineering

Our program is focused on innovative research geared towards developing new technologies and practices that ensure we have clean air to breath, clean water to drink, clean soil to grow our crops and clean energy to sustain our society. Our goal is to reduce the impact of our society on our environment. Our programs are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Environmental Engineering which allows our graduate students to take courses at both Carleton and the University of Ottawa.

Fields of Specialization

  • Air Pollution
  • Management of Solid and Hazardous Waste
  • Water Resources and Groundwater Management
  • Water and Waste Water Processing and Treatment

Sustainable Energy Engineering

Sustaining energy production and use is becoming increasingly challenging and requires innovative research into new and existing technologies, changes in consumer behaviour and more creative policy and regulatory approaches. Our graduate program in sustainable energy addresses these crucial challenges in a unique interdisciplinary fashion that involves both engineering and public policy.

Technology Innovation Management

Technology Innovation Management (TIM) is a unique master’s program to train aspiring entrepreneurs on creating wealth at the early stages of company or opportunity life cycles. The program focuses on the launch and growth of technology companies and growth seeking initiatives of existing companies. The program provides benefits to founders of new companies, people seeking more senior leadership roles at existing companies, and talented professionals building credentials and expertise for their next career move. The program offers a number of hands-on opportunities.

Fields of Specialization

  • Engineering Management Processes
  • Communications Systems Engineering
