Key Facts

The first of its kind in the UK, the course has been developed with The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) to ensure the qualification is tailored towards careers within the industry. The course is also relevant to those already working in all event management areas or roles. It also will appeal to graduates from disciplines such media, tourism, music technology, public relations, business or marketing. Birmingham is one of the best cities in the country when it comes to event venues. It boasts an enviable array of locations to visit and draw professional experience from. There are impressive event spaces on every scale, from the massive exhibition halls of The NEC and ICC to museums, galleries and a wide range events spaces. There are also a number of music venues, such as the O2 Academy, as well as smaller, bespoke venues like the Custard Factory. Our close partnerships with related organisations like The NEC allows students access to the real world of events and exhibition management while studying. Students on this course can develop their own professional network, ready for when they enter the workplace.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have a 2:1 or higher in a related discipline from any UK university and/or one-three years of relevant industry experience, supported by references and any industry qualifications.

Employment Opportunities: This master’s programme is focused on creating skilled and knowledgeable professionals who wish to develop a career in the events and exhibition industry, but would equally well equip those seeking roles which involve elements of events management – marketing, PR, arts administrators, project managers, agency management etc.

Placements: Whilst not part of the assessed coursework students are encouraged to gain real, hands-on work experience throughout the academic year.

Course Structure

On this course, students study the professional skills needed to put together successful events and learn how to organise conferences and exhibitions. The course develops these skills to the highest level, enabling students to be ready to enter the industry, fully prepared and equipped with the skills to embark on event and exhibition management. The Birmingham School of Media’s strong links with the NEC Group means that students can learn from people at the very top of the industry, gain invaluable insider information by working directly with professionals and learn from real life case studies and venues.


Students learn the project management skills that are essential in event management, as well as how to generate the new ideas that keep the events industry fresh and exciting. There is a particular emphasis on creativity, understanding the potential of technology, analysis and high-level problem solving and communication and management skills. The modules studied include Exhibition and Event Industry, Creative Enterprise, Exhibition Production. The strong practical element to the course also encourages students to research, develop and produce their own events either individually or as part of a group: The Events and Exhibitions Industry (30 credits), Enterprise (30 credits), Exhibition Production (30 credits), Production Lab (30 credits), MA by Practice (60 credits).


The modules are assessed through presentations, reports and practical event management experience.
