The Master’s in Creative Knitwear Design, directed by Sonia Veroni, in collaboration with con Modateca Deanna and more than 40 companies from the Italian manufacturing district, aims to train designers and industry professionals with skills both in illustration and technique useful for designing complete collections and models. The Master’s experience involves: materials and trends research, new trends, design, technical and technological development, industrial and craftsmanship processes, product positioning and communication.
The Master’s takes place in San Martino in Rio (in the province of Reggio Emilia) at the site of Modateca Deanna. Modateca is an international Fashion Documentation Center, founded by Deanna Ferretti in the late 1950s collects and promotes the identity of the Miss Deanna knitwear factory, which has been a centre of excellence in the knitwear manufacturing industry working with and for some of the world’s most important and prestigious fashion designers.
Personal Collections and Industry Projects of the students of the first edition of the Master’s, developed with the support of more than 40 companies, were showcased at Pitti Filati sponsored by Pitti Discovery Foundation, Max Mara, The Woolmark Company and Avant Toi.
The Knitwear Designer has to have competence linked to research and analysis, has to know the different trends, so as to interpret through his/her work the identity codes of a Maison in a contemporary and innovative way.
The Masters aims to instill organizational skills from both a design and operational prospective, essential characteristics for a knitwear professional figure able to effectively resolve issues within productive laboratories with understanding of the creative potential and the possibilities for implementation of projects
This Master’s is intended for those who have successfully completed a recognised first level degree (typically BA equivalent to Level 6 of EQF-European Qualifications Framework), in a subject area relevant to this course, and wish to study with the aim to seriously focus on a career in Costume Design. Students who have successfully completed an undergraduate course not linked to the specialist area of the Master’s and students who have not completed a recognised undergraduate degree, but have completed private courses within the subject area of the Master’s course can access the course but only after the Course Council evaluates the single application to understand the suitability and level of preparation of the candidate Industry professionals of the sector.
The course duration is one academic year and attendance is mandatory on this full-time course. However to be accepted at the final assessments students must have at least 80% proven attendance
The course will be taught both in Italian and English and classes will be held at Accademia Costume & Moda as well as at Modateca Deanna's historic headquarters in the town of SAN MARTINO IN RIO (Reggio Emilia), in the heart of the Italian Knitwear District.
The course places great emphasis on collaborations with prestigious partner companies, these are a crucial element of the course. Therefore, students will be required to take part in external visits to these facilities in order to become familiar with and learn about the most technologically advanced knitwear manufacturing processes

- To follow the development a comprehensive knitwear project from concept to raw materials production and garment manufacturing, from start to finish.

- To equip students with the relevant tools necessary for a professional career in the international fashion industry.
The course duration is one academic year and attendance is mandatory on this full-time course. However to be accepted at the final assessments students must have at least 80% proven attendance.

At the end of the course, students who meet the Entry Requirments will receive an Academic Master Diploma (60 ECTS).
In order to guarantee the quality of the course, admission is limited to a fixed number of students every year.
For this reason we suggest interested students to send their application within June. In case of delayed applications, we invite applicants to contact the Counseling Office of Accademia Costume e Moda.
To apply for the course, it is necessary to send curriculum, motivational letter and portfolio which will be evaluated by our Director of Education and pass the admission interview.
Course participants must be in possession of a relevant degree in Fashion Design from either an Italian institution (a 3 year degree minimum requirement) or an international University or College (Bachelor’s Degree). We also welcome applications from candidates who have relevant work experience in the Design and Creative Department of a Fashion House, or similar background, and those who are experienced in collection designing. Such candidates will not be awarded an Academic Master (60 ECTS) but will receive a certificate of participation in the Master’s course.
Students must also have a B1 level of Italian or 5.0 IELTS of English certification.
