Program Description

UQAR closely monitoring the evolution of the risk posed to public health by COVID-19 (coronavirus). It is therefore important to regularly consult this section provided for this purpose on the UQAR .

The MSc trains scientists to understand the dynamics of the marine system in a multidisciplinary and comprehensive way.

It provides an informed knowledge of the marine environment, its resources, the techniques of study and exploitation, the pollution problems that it encounters and the appropriate intervention methods.

The research project and the courses allow to deepen one's knowledge in one of the four areas of specialization:

  • Chemical oceanography;
  • Biological oceanography;
  • Geological oceanography;
  • Physical oceanography.

objectives

This program aims at training scientists capable of conducting oceanographic research, that is to study the phenomena of the sea in a multidisciplinary and global way.

At the end of their training program in oceanography, students will have acquired sufficient knowledge of the marine environment, its resources, the techniques of study and exploitation of this environment, pollution problems and methods of intervention. appropriate.

The research project and the courses taken in the program allow the student to acquire multidisciplinary knowledge in oceanography and to deepen his knowledge acquired in a field of specialization.

Structure of the program

The master's degree in oceanography makes it possible to carry out a research project (memory of 27 credits) allowing to deepen one's knowledge in a field of specialization of the sciences of the sea.

In their first term, students participate in an oceanographic mission on the research vessel Coriolis II as part of the course Experimental Oceanography. The program also includes a general oceanography course and two elective courses, the subjects of which vary according to the student research project.

This program also develops the skills required to pursue doctoral studies.

Exceptional environments like laboratories

Bordering the south shore of the St. Lawrence estuary, clinging to the terraces that lead to the Appalachians, Rimouski is a privileged place to study natural environments, whether continental or marine. Rimouski has a geographical position of choice for programs focused on the study of natural ecosystems. Here the "terrain" is never far away.

The students thus have the opportunity, during the courses, of the para-academic activities and their leisures, of:

  • Navigate the waters of the Lower Estuary of the St. Lawrence River or browse its shores and islands;
  • Discover the national parks and wildlife reserves of the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie region (Bic, Lac Témiscouata, Gaspésie, etc.);
  • Cross to discover the North Shore and the Saguenay Fjord;
  • Visit the forests, lakes and rivers of the region and explore the Appalachian plateaus.

A great need for oceans professionals and researchers

Each year, several job opportunities are available for graduates in oceanography, who depend on disciplinary training (biological, chemical, geological or physical oceanography).

As a large number of pollutants, both natural and man-made, end up in the ocean, environmentalists around the world are beginning to take an interest in ocean affairs. The need for specialists who understand not only the ever-increasing interdependence of the ocean, urbanization and industrialization, but also the potential dangers of maritime accidents continues to grow.

Public sector

In Canada, the main employer of graduates in oceanography is the federal government, specifically the Departments of Fisheries and Oceans and Natural Resources. Other government departments and agencies and universities employ oceanographers to teach and conduct research.

Private sector

Jobs in the private sector largely affect studies and environmental assessment. Some large companies employ their own marine science specialists while others prefer to hire consultants.

Fisheries and aquaculture

Fisheries research requires knowledge of almost all aspects of oceanography to perform population assessment and fish population dynamics modeling. The rapid expansion of aquaculture has resulted in a demand for a number of specialists, including fish nutrition and disease control.

Application for admission

Canadian students

Step 1: Admission Requirements

  • Choose the admission quarter.
  • Choose the place of instruction.
  • Check the conditions of admission and quota.
  • Check the requirements for fluency in French.
  • Find a research director, if necessary.
  • Respect the deadlines for submission of admission applications.

Step 2: Filing the application

  • Complete the application for admission.
  • Provide the necessary documents to process the application for admission.
  • Pay the admission fee.

Step 3: Demand Tracking

  • Receive the decision on the application for admission.
  • Register for classes.

Foreign students

Step 1: Choose your training

  • Choice of study program and campus.
  • Equivalence of diplomas and admission requirements.
  • Requirements for fluency in French.
  • Research Directorate, if necessary (research-type graduate programs).

Step 2: Check your financial capacity

Foreign students must ensure, before leaving their country of origin, to have the necessary financial resources to cover all the expenses of study and stay.

Step 3: Submit your application

  • Application for admission online.
    It is important to send all the required documents for the analysis of the application for admission as soon as possible. The Office of the Registrar of UQAR will not be able to process the application for admission without them.

Step 4: Obtain legal permissions to study in Canada

Foreign students admitted to a study program or exchange program for a period of more than 6 months must obtain the residence permit below.

Students admitted to a program lasting less than six months (a one-term program) are exempt from the CAQ and study permit. However, depending on the nationality of the candidate, a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) may be required to stay in Canada.

Applications for authorization are the responsibility of the candidate. UQAR can not intervene in this process, which is the exclusive responsibility of the ministries concerned.

Students must ensure that they have a valid passport when applying for a residence permit.

If student residence permits are not obtained in time for back to school, contact a foreign student advisor to evaluate options.

Step 5: Prepare to arrive in Canada

  • Health insurance and hospitalization.
  • Foreign Student Matching Program.
  • Reservation of accommodation.
  • Plan your itinerary to Rimouski or Lévis.
  • Head to UQAR .
