Global supply networks and supply chains around the world are an essential part of today's business.

Extracting competitiveness and increasing sustainability for a company from its supply networks and chains requires special skills, competencies and tools for exploring and managing global supply networks.

Supply management is a unique Master's programme in Finland, providing expertise on strategic supply and supplier management. The programme is designed to correspond to the growing needs of today's business by educating open-minded, innovative managers in the fields of supply management and purchasing.

Supply management is a cross-functional activity of a firm, requiring a broad understanding of international business. Your studies will integrate strategic management, international business and relationship management in supply networks.

In this programme, you will focus on supply strategies, global challenges of sourcing, and the development of purchasing and supply chains.

Your studies will aggregate theories and concepts of business and technology and present recent applications and methods in the field, thus promoting your problem-solving, decision-making and analytical skills. You will gain specialised knowledge about the elements of supply strategies and factors of interaction in supply networks.

The studies include interactive case studies, company assignments, group work, independent exercises, literature studies and lectures. About 95% of the programme's Master's theses are based on real-life business problems and are prepared for companies or public sector organisations.

The programme also offers a possibility for double degree studies at the University of Twente, the Netherlands.

Intended learning outcomes

As a graduate, you will take an integrative approach to different business disciplines and functions of a firm and will be able to analyse and solve complex business problems in the field of supply management.

You will be an expert in the field of supply management. You will have strong analytical skills and be able to apply tools to manage supply chains and supplier relationships professionally.

You will have a global perspective on business and will be able to recognise the risks, challenges and opportunities of global supply networks. You will attain a foundation for doctoral studies and for continuous professional and intellectual growth.

Degree structures and studies

The Master's Programme in Supply Management is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration, M. Sc. (Econ. & Bus. Admin.), which is 120 ECTS credits.

The studies connect two perspectives: the internal viewpoint of organising and aligning supply management according to the firm's strategy, and the external viewpoint consisting of supplier relationships and supply network management.

The programme includes core, specialisation, minor and language studies.

Core studies (42 ECTS credits) include courses on strategic supply management and supply chain financing, sustainable global sourcing, supplier relationship management and service business.

Specialisation studies (48 ECTS credits) include courses on risk management and supply chain improvement, and external resource management.

The Master's thesis, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis is an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. Students complete it during their fourth semester.

Minor studies (minimum 24 ECTS credits) may deal with international marketing, sustainability, digitalisation and business analytics, or international business and entrepreneurship.

Double degree studies for LUT degree students

The MSM programme also offers a possibility for double degree studies.

The MSM double degree partner university is the University of Twente, the Netherlands.

Students admitted to complete the Master's degree in the MSM programme at LUT are eligible to apply to the double degree programme.

Students admitted to the double degree programme receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.

Students from partner universities are able to study as double degree students at LUT.
