Master's Programme in Marketing, 120 ECTS
This programme is given by Umeå School of Business and Economics. The objective of this programme is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of consumer behaviour, knowledge of the tools and techniques they can use to collect and analyze information about consumers and competitors, and experience in making executive-level decisions in the area of marketing management.
The programme emphasizes the applied use of [analytical] techniques and hands-on experience in designing and implementing marketing strategies in competitive environments through the balanced use of cases, online simulation, statistical software packages, and actual fieldwork experience.
This is attractive to employers who need candidates with [analytical and managerial] capacity in today's competitive markets. The programme is also a suitable basis for work in functions at a higher level in organizations, firms and governmental as well as non-governmental institutions.
Level of education: Continuation programme.
All courses are studied in sequence and not parallel. This means that you study one course at a time full time for five weeks then you have an exam and then the next course starts. There are four courses each semester. If you are used to a parallel system this might sound like very few courses but the expected workload for one semester is at least 40 hours per week in this system of sequential studies.
At Umeå School of Business and Economics, internationalization is given high priority. There are plenty of opportunities to go abroad to study. The environment at the business school is also increasingly international with both students and teachers with an international background.
International exchange is an important component of student life at Umeå School of Business and Economics. Our 70 partner universities around the world send students to Umeå every year, and about 45 % of our business school graduates have spent one or two semesters abroad as part of their curricula.
Graduates of the programme will have acquired knowledge suitable for a career in the area of marketing both as generalists and as specialists. They will be able to plan, perform and analyze market investigations. This is attractive to employers who need candidates with management capacity in today's competitive markets.
The programme is also a suitable basis for work in staff functions at a higher level in major international companies. Graduates are also eligible to apply for PhD studies after the first year.
In order to be eligible to apply to our Master's programmes here at USBE you need a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Business Administration 180 ECTS (three years of full-time study), which should include:
•90 ECTS (one and a half years of full-time study) in Business Administration.
Subjects can be defined differently in different countries. Examples of courses that we consider to be part of the subject of Business Administration are Accounting, Finance, Controlling, Management, Marketing, Logistics, and Entrepreneurship.
Language skills required
Students are required to have special eligibility in English equal to English B from Swedish gymnasium. This is usually shown with an internationally recognized test of English proficiency.
The Master’s Programme in Marketing, have Special requirements:
90 ECTS (one and a half years of full-time study) in Business Administration (including at least 7.5 ECTS Marketing) and 7.5 ECTS of basic level Statistics/Mathematics (Statistics is recommended).
Selection criteria and Notification of Admission Status
Admission is granted on a competitive basis. The selection criteria are the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) result.
If you have no GMAT test result you are still eligible to apply for the programme (Master's Programme in Accounting) but will be ranked after applicants with a GMAT result and according to the number of academic credits you have.
