Machine science is one of the oldest and most traditional of the engineering sciences, characterised by a strong desire to think differently and effect change in the world.
The high-level civilisation in the world is based strongly on welded metal structures, which keep constructions in shape and machines running. Their design and production are one of the most fascinating engineering tasks.
In this Master's programme, you will acquire the newest and most purposeful knowledge and expertise for the design and manufacturing of innovative, sustainable, competitive and safe welded metal structures for demanding applications, especially for dynamic loading or arctic conditions.
The teaching combines theoretical studies and laboratory exercises in a modern environment with advanced methods to ensure that you will have excellent skills for your future career in both academia and industry.
You will learn from different teams of experts from the laboratory of steel structures, welding and laser technologies who will bring the newest results of high-level research to you.
Teaching and research are carried out in close cooperation with enterprises and other universities and research institutions.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing the study programme you will have acquired comprehensive knowledge in design, analysing, fabrication and research of the modern and competitive welded metal structures, and the specific knowledge and competencies for this area of specialisation.
In this Master's programme you will acquire knowledge and expertise for carrying out lifetime and reliability calculations and tests for different types of mechanical structures, especially for welded metal constructions under various types of loading conditions, including harsh environmental loads (e.g. wind, ice, seawater etc.) and dynamic loading cases.
You will also acquire a good understanding of the strength and ductility properties of metallic materials and their behavior under long-term loading cases together with their weldability aspects.
These outcomes will give you the good know-how to design different types of metal structures such as machine bodies, bridges, buildings, structural components and bodies for vehicles or supporting structures for different types of engineering applications.
Degree structure and studies
The Master's programme in Advanced Structural Design and Robotised Welding is a two-year programme. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.
The programme includes core and specialisation studies.
Core studies (35 ECTS credits) include topics on research methods, structural materials, industrial manufacturing processes, reliability engineering design, management and leadership skills.
Specialisation studies (85 ECTS credits) include studies on integrated design and fabrication of welded structures, structural design, fatigue design, advanced welding processes, sustainable welding production, welding metallurgy, laser processing, and 3D-printing.
The Master's Thesis and Seminar, 30 ECTS credits, is a part of specialisation studies. The thesis an advanced research project, which requires approximately six months of full-time work. It is completed during the fourth semester of the degree programme.

Students admitted to complete the Master's degree in the Advanced Structural Design and Robotised Welding programme at LUT are eligible to apply for the double degree programme.
Students admitted to the double degree programme receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities.

By choosing welded metal structures you will acquire the skills required for tasks in the concurrent engineering of design and the fabrication of innovative welded structures for demanding applications. You can specialise in design, welding technology or laser technology.
In addition to profound theoretical knowledge, you will acquire expertise in modern design methods and analysing tools, such as fatigue design and FEA, or modern structural materials and manufacturing processes, such as smart adaptive robotic welding and laser-based production.
This wide field of demanding applications will undoubtedly need new experts in Finland, but it will also open doors for you globally. You can find employment as a designer, strength analyser, welding coordinator, laser system integrator, workshop manager, R & D expert, teacher, or entrepreneur. The education will also give you the readiness to continue your studies towards a doctoral degree.
