The enormous growth of the urban population that has occurred in the last decades and that is expected in the future, forces the cities to face new challenges. In this context, and with the appearance of new technological solutions, the concept of Smart City has emerged as an alternative that seeks to address the problems of the city with a comprehensive and connected vision. Currently, more than half of the population lives in urban areas, a figure which is expected to rise to 70 per cent by 2050. In addition, to date, 70% of global wealth is generated in cities.
It is for this reason that the budgetary policies and efforts of central governments in cities are increasing significantly in a large number of countries, as these are considered the basic engines of economic growth. If we focus on the European Union, currently more than 60% of the population lives in cities, generating 85% of the wealth according to the Green Paper on Urban Mobility (EC, 2007)....

Master of Urban Housing
Faculty of Planning – CEPT University
Urban housing, apart from being a shelter, is seen as means of access to employment and livelihood, urban and community services, proximity to desirable neighbors. Majority of urban housing is supplied by the market where land and finance play a major role. Access to decent housing that is affordable for all is key to a habitable city. However, cities across the developed and developing countries are grappling with varying degrees of housing unaffordability as per the specifics of local land and labor markets. Policymaking and planning to ensure access to decent affordable housing for all income groups is a complex process and requires a multi-pronged approach. It requires framing of policies and regulations that will enable local markets to generate adequate, affordable and decent housing stock. At the same time, it requires framing of policies, programs, and regulations that will provide assistance to households, living in substandard housing not catered to by the formal markets, to access decent affordable housing. It is only when such a multipronged approach is adopted, that cities will be able to efficiently address the issue of housing unaffordability in their specific land and labor market....

Design is experiencing a time of strong momentum and growth. The rapid evolution of production methods and ways of living require more and more adaptability and innovation. Anticipating and stimulating change have become main factors effecting competitiveness, being an engine for change and effecting contemporary economies. Traditional disciplinary boundaries have been overwhelmed by the need for greater interaction, ability to work in groups and the transfer of technology. Designers are now required to know new design skills and ways of information sharing, as well as have improved ability to listen to the needs of clients. On the other hand, it provides designers with new opportunities to draw on the wealth of traditional knowledge but yet without formal conditions or style obligations. Even when applied to interior architecture, the designer must be able to make use of new skills to delineate separated professions, those typical of the architecture....

In the past decade, incomes and jobs tended to grow faster in these urban areas than their national averages”....
